2012 VRS Octy with Bolero HU. Has anyone upgraded the speakers in this setup and found a positive difference? Or would it be a waste? What are the standard speakers and are they cardboard cones?

you will gain VERY little by getting aftermarket speakers whilst keeping the standard headunit and not amping the speakers.

Most aftermarket speakers are not designed for the tiny power your headunit has. There are a few speakers which do work off headunit power such as some of the low end hertz kit but you wont get a huge difference
