Headlight revamp

Featured Replies

Ok so I wanted a whiter looking light to appear from the front end of the car as the "streetlight yellow glow" is making it look like a 13 year old car (which it is but never mind)

I was recommended: Osram Cool Blue Hyper

But I've seen a little disclaimer saying there for off road use and are illegal and will invalidate insurance if found on a road using vehicle.

Also I was also recommended putting in LEDs in to the side lights and after a quick look I've come across the same sort of fine print.

Do I need new friends as they are recommending stuff that will get me pulled over or does it not matter?

I very much doubt you will be pulled for that! I've never been pulled for mine :)

i have led 501 type side lights which havent got me pulled and recently passed mot, no. plate led's. osram night breaker +120% bulbs which are pretty awsome too :)

Technically if it's not e marked it has no place on a road going vehicle but the only time I can see your lights causing you an insurance issue is in the event of an accident the other party complaining they were dazzled/blinded by your HID's etc.

I've run LED's before and retrofitted HID's in other cars (projector lenses), they are bright, white and as good if not better than the conventional bulbs in my opinion, LED's should be fine but i'd never fit an HID set-up to a reflector headlight. I liked Phillips Extreme Vision headlights but they didn't last that long on my last car, Osram did a similar spec for less money. The one thing I'd not do is put HID's in reflector headlights as it's my pet hate, they look awful and genuinely do dazzle other drivers.

Cool that's nice to know. Another question, for the side LEDs should I go for a more traditional looking bit of kit e.g.

or one of these crazy little 5050 SMD LED setups?

Ive used the SMD bulbs off ebay before, they were bright as hell and brilliant.. right up until they stopped working, they are cheap and start to flash after about a week.. not worth it.. I use these:

Never missed a beat! much better than the SMD types.. bit more expensive than the ebay ones but you buy cheap you buy twice!

I don't like to state the obvious but Halfraud's own brand is invariably from the same source just repackaged.

hmmm.. lol

SMD LED's are defo the way to go but the problem with those from my experience is vibration causes the wires to break in the lower part of the bulb.... currently i am using:

these are like a printed circuit board that plug in so there is less to go wrong and i currently cannot fault them. theyve been in for a year no probs.

Well it was only less than £8 p&p included for a set of both types of LED side light and I will run one set then the other and see if there is any difference between the two types and then report with my findings.

Next thing on the agenda is the main bulbs.

well i jumped the gun and bought these http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1497.l2649

ive got them fitted now, seem great, just worried that theyle not last...?

i have a similar set of these on no. plate lights only 3 smds per side not 6 lol and it lights the whole world up ... they should be fine though...

as for main bulbs ... osram night breakers +120% :)

mate ive got them on my num plate lights too lol, just turned them round abit in housing so theyre not as bright lol!!

lol they do look pretty good though led front sides look really good too though

yea wanna find them too... ebay jobby?

Here we go,

thats a single LED vs a standard bulb

IMG_4819_zps3c32cd51.jpg

this is the smd led vs standard

IMG_4821_zps2c2148c4.jpg

and this is the comparason between the different led's

SMD LDE vs LED

I've just stuck with the normal looking LED's not the cluster SMD's as the light may not be as bright but the direction is better I'm not sure if you get the same idea from the pics but the light from the SMD LEDs is brighter and allot more scattered it was slightly dazzling even from 45 degree angle.
