Power Steering broken?

Featured Replies

Skoda Octavia 2.0 8v auto, 51 plate.

Just got home and the Mrs has told me that the power steering stopped working on her car while she was parking up.

Very dark outside, but I can't see any fluid under the car. Power steering feels ok for a few seconds after starting the car and turning the wheel. As soon as you turn the wheel you can hear a very loud hissing sound from the steering column in a car, and the steering very quickly feels unassisted.

Any ideas? thanks in advance.

check the power steering fluid level iam sure it is almost empty and dont drive the car until you top it up.

Fluid was a little low, but still way above the low level. Steering was usable but still stiff yesterday morning after top up. I have now got a new 2nd hand pump from a scrap yard which I will fit tomorrow.

Pump did not fix the problem, so now changing the rack for a second hand one. Got the sub frame lowered today, will fit the new rack in next few days when the weather is better.

New rack from the scrap yard (vag spares sandwich) has fixed the problem. The system is weeping slightly from the pump banjo bolt, so I have ordered some new crush washers.
