Reconditioned gearbox. Worth it?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I found this forum while doing research on my Octavia's issues. I don't know anything about cars :'(

Just to give some backgound, I have a 54 reg Octavia, which I baught in Jun/Jul 2012, with 119K miles on the clock.

From day 1, there was a problem with the clutch pedal 'sticking' after a gearchange. I took it back to the dealer and they bled the clutch, but it didn't resolve it. It only happened once in a while, so I left it. In October 12, I had to change the glowplugs and the guy who did it (VW Specialists) said that the clutch thing might be the master cylinder, which is not expensive. He also said that the DMF sounds dodgy so I might have to have that looked at as well. I gave this info to the dealer and he said they'll do it for me and I would only have to pay for the parts excl VAT. I went on holiday in Nov and thougt I'd get it done when I get back. However, after I got back, I heard the most horrible noises from the gearbox. So again I took it back to the dealer. By now it got so bad that I thought I wasn't even going to make it there, as with every gearchange it sounded like the whole gearbox was about to fall out!

After 2 weeks I haven't heard anything from them and called. I was told that the rubber 'bung' was taken of the box and not replaced again, causing the bearings to come out. This meant that the whole gearbox had to be reconditioned. I was told that it had to have been the people who did the glowplugs (when they checked the DMF). Still, they would get it done AT NO EXTRA COST!

So here I am, more than a month later, and I have just been told that ALL the gears are shot and it will take a bit longer, so I might get it back in another week's time.

Now there are a couple of things bothering me:

1. Why would someone put in a new clutch, DMF and recondition a gearbox at their expense if the problem was caused by another garage??

2. Why is it taking so long?

3. If everything in 1 is done and they stick to their word about the costs, will it still be ok to drive and for how long?

My apologies for the rambling! I know it might be a bit much for a 1st post, but I'm pretty much ****ed of at the moment.
