frozen door lock

Featured Replies

Due to the cold weather, we have found that the door locks (only the fronts I think) jam open - that is, it's now not possible to close the door. Is there something simple I can do or where should I squirt some WD-40 to help stop this happening?

Thinking about it, the mechanism feels like it could do with a lube anyways (at least from the outside).

Pull both handles internal and external. At least that's what I did the other day when it wouldn't close

cool, I'll try that next time.

is there any way to squirt in some lubricant without dismantling the door card?

Silicone lubricant spray works best, Lithium grease spray also works fine, it used to be default grease long time ago. Just do not alternate between the 2 as they do not mix. Both are available in similar spray+thin pipe cans as the WD40.

You can get at the lock when the door is open. Best to heat and dry out the locks first (hair dryer onto the catch, or warm the car up for a good while). Then apply grease on the catch, and in the hole above the catch. On the driver's door with a keyhole, apply some grease into the keyhole as well.

Edit: door hinges and rollers/stoppers like a bit of grease too, every now and then, not to forget the boot lock and hinges :)
