Internal bike holder and/or tow bar prep

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I've got a 1.4 TSi SE Plus on order and have a few questions regarding carrying bicycles. Does anyone here have an internal bike holder and, if so, what do you think of it? How is it secured? Is it good value?

On my current car I've happily used an external Thule bike rack for many years mounted on a swan neck tow bar. The Thule has a 7 pin connector and I have no intentions to actually tow anything so I guess a 13 pin connector is no use to me. Is that assumption correct? I didn't specify Tow Bar prep on my order but the dealer says this isn't a problem as they use a local specialist. Is there anything I should watch for?

I enjoy reading your postings and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks in advance Andy :)

The dealer can either fit a 7 pin connector or a 13 pin one with the appropriate 7 pin adapters (12N/12S).

A 7 to 13 pin addaptor is something like £4,99 on eBay. So get the car future proof and definitely get 13pin on the car. Much better for resale value than only having ancient 7 pin electrics.

Many thanks for the advice - will do!

I have tow bar prep and will be getting a detachable tow ball and a 7 pin connection as I only ever tow a garden trailer or my sailing dinghy both of which are 7 pin.

Hi Andy,

I was going to go to a specialist like Chester Tow bars who seem pretty good.

The Chester Skoda dealer uses them, I think most dealers tend not to fit towbars themselves but sub contract.

I havn't got a price yet, waiting till the snow clears!

I'd echo Johann's comment in #3 above. The standard fitment throughout Europe is now a 13 pin socket, which is what the next owner is likely to be looking for when you eventually sell.

+1! The price difference is a a no brainer plus it's a much better designed socket

If I'm off on my tod, I just chuck whichever bike in the back with the seats folded and a B & Q tarp to protect the inside.

If I'm away with chums or we're off on holibobs with luggage and dog(s), I'll fit my Westphalia detachable towbar and my Atera Strada rack, which slides back, even when fully loaded to allow full tailgate access.

It's an expensive solution, locks to car and has built in bike locks, stable at high speeds, but now on the 3rd car and used most weeks

I have the internal bike rack, which fits to the 2 rear lashing points at floor level.

I also have the spare wheel and the 2 are not compatible.

I don't think I have used it in over 2 years yet to carry a bike!!

I tend to ride from my house, so have never used it.

In winter I normally take the spare wheel out and retro fit the non spare wheel floor, but I haven't this winter.

I have tested the rack and it works very well.

Many thanks again - I've ordered silver too. I've got 4 different bikes to fit but the Brompton won't need the rack :-)

Got the internal bike rack in the back of our Yeti which is brilliant. Takes the two bikes and still leaves enough room for a rear passenger and luggage all secure, out of the elements and road spray. Avoids the problems of obstructing registration plates and lights too.

Thanks mullcott - this is precisely why I chose the Yeti :-)
