Automatics in the snow (CVT Micra)

Featured Replies

I have a CVT micra (K11). Unlike other Autos I have seen with D1, D2 settings and even a snowflake button. The CVT gearbox that Nissan use only has D and Ds settings. Obviously D is drive but what is Ds?

I doubt its sport, could it be for snow/slippery conditions? Either way what is it supposed to do?

I would have though it is D Sport. Most auto's, DSG's etc have a sport mode.

You rarely get a snow setting these days.

D should be fine for snowy conditions.

Not entirely sure how the CVT would react to the wheels slipping and you needing to keep the power on to get up a hill etc though.

This a 1998 car and off the top of my head Clios still had such a thing in 1999.

A sport setting would be just about the most entirely inappropriate thing to have on such a Micra.

cheers for that, i've been looking for something like that since i bought it and found nothing as good as that.

Just high revs/engine braking then. Might take the car out in the snow later to see how it goes. Its got pretty skinny tyres but I've no idea how the CVT will react in snow.

It's definitely a sport setting if you can believe it. Have a look at this PDF:

Phil is absolutely right. My wife had one and it is a sport setting - not snow!

Very interesting how the clutch works. Using metal shavings and then applying a magnetic current to it to get them to stiffen up and "engage" together.

Skinny tyres are good in the snow so it should be fine.

And yeh it looks like the "Sport" mode just causes a lower ratio to be selected and keeping the revs on the power band. Never driven a CVT... must be weird not having proper seperate gears as such.

You can use 'S' like you use an 'Overdrive off button' on an automatic.

Like you might on hilly roads to stop it going up and down the gears, in the CVT a similar thing.

Good to go to 'S' to decelerate, (slowing/decending slopes), good to hold when wanting to pick up speed (sporty),

Good in Snow, (snow driving and limiting it reving up.)

If anyone want to try a great CVT in snow, try a Toyota iQ Multidrive 1.0.

It has 'B' Braking, 'S' Sporty/snow/slow down, 'D' Drive,

& you can hold in the electronics button & switch off the electronic aids for snow/ice driving.

For the best small Auto with Electromagnetic gearbox, (electromagnetic powder clutch)

the Subaru Justy 4x4 Automatic was fantastic.

Almost instant lock up and acceleration in Forward and reverse, & good traction.

Drove my mums 1L micro cvt a couple of years ago in the snow. Put mud grip tyres on it but it was prity good in the snow. Defiantly sport mode for going down hill and just lift off. Just had to get used to the high revs. Using the engin for breaking.

It's also pretty good up to 35mph, getting away from lights. No good doing 30-80 times.

I found D better for going up hill in the snow, but not a lot of throttle, and keeping revs lower.

Are all micras purple?
