Average life expectancy of MPI thermostat?

Featured Replies

How long is everyone's thermostat lasting? I'm aware it's a common issue, but I suspect mine has packed in again. I tried one of the "V2" thermostats a while back, which originate from CZ, and were sold by Jorily when in existence but found the circlip had rusted after use, and some sort of sealant was applied between housing and thermostat. If only a Favorit cast aluminium one would fit... Thanks for your "improvements" VW

I don't know about lifespan but i'm on my second. I got my car 11 months ago and one of the things I took comfort in was it had a new 'stat. That was until the sensor died, it wasn't till I replaced it I noticed it was some French POS rather than OE. My new 'stat and housing are VAG OE so if it doesn't last 2 years I know they'll cough up for a new one.

We repaired one a 1.3 Felicia the other day. One of the plastic clips that hold the metal part on had broken, a couple of small holes were drilled in it and a piece of stiff wire was used to hold it down.

If you get genuine VW parts, you'll get a two year warranty on them.

We've had our 1.4 mpi (02 plate) for around 3.5 years & no thermostat required thus far (just turned 85k).

Within the last few weeks replaced the one on the Felly, which are known for failure! :wonder:

Difficult to predict any sort of average life span & some tend to be more awkward to do than others.

Rob ;)

the one on my car has only been replaced once 2001 fabia.

replaced the thermostat housing and sensor at the same time
