Tyre speed rating

Featured Replies

Quick question. As I have no intention ever going over 130mph in my vrs, can I put H rated tyres on it rather than V which are rated up to 149mph?

Actual reason I ask, I've put some 15" steelies on (2nd hand) and just noticed that the tyres they came with are H rated. They're not winter tyres. The load rating is actually 85 rather than 84 so no problem there.

Am I invalidating my insurance, breaking law, other? If I was travelling at 140 and a tyre blew I would reasonably expect my insurance company to say we're not paying out (were I to survive) but if I had a blow out at 70 would they then try the same?

I think the basic insurance requirement is that you fit tyres of the same speed rating as fitted by the manufacturer.(W rating,I think)

If you fit winter tyres, they can be of a lower rating, but you need to inform the Ins.Co.

...so I think you have a problem.

Its what the car is capable of, not what you might drive it at.

On that basis, we could all use "S" rated tyres as that's well over the speed limit in the UK anyway.
