EverNote issues

Featured Replies

I recently installed Evernote on my Blackberry Playbook, mainly as a compliment to the Microsoft One Note that I have been running on the desktop. Using Evernote, I created a test file on Playbook, mainly to test what coukd be done on PB but also to see whether this file could be read on my desktop.

The test file included plain text that was typed in thru the PB keyboard, a photo taken with the PB camera, a sound file created on the PB, a sound file downloaded from the web, a PDF file downloaded from the web and a drawing created on PB using the DrawBook app. All these items easily embedded in the EverNote document and displayed/played back correctly. However, I although I was able to copy and embed a link to a web page in the Evernote doc, it didn't save as a web link - it just came back as ordinary text.

So, first question, how do you embed a web link in an Evernote doc ?

Next. As, I established an Evernote account at the time I downloaded the software, I was was able to sign-in to tbis account from my desktop using Internet Explorer and access the test document I had created. Everything that I had saved on the EN test doc showed, except the sound (Wav) files, which would not display the file icon or playback.

Second question. Is it possible to configure the sound files, so they work properly in Windows ?

Lastly. I tried to install Evernote on my Windows 7 desktop. But whilst the software downloaded, it woukdn't install - it kept on saying tbat another user had a previous copy of EN on the desktop hard disk and woukdn't allow my install until I'd removed it. Despite double-checking the installed programs thru Windows control panel and checking the installed program folders, I couldn't find another copy. Even, using administrators rights, I couldn't get EN to load on the Desktop.

So final question is has anybody come across the install problem and us there a way round it ?

Also, is there a "Web-Clipper" that is compatible with EN and the PB OCX operating system ?

Any assistance appreciated.

Cheers.

One other issue I've discovered. If I access the EN test doc on the desktop using IE9 and try to send the EN doc to Microsoft One note usinmg the "Send to OneNote" icon on one of the toolbars, it accesses OneNote and brings up the OneNote page, but the page only shows an error message saying that I need to enable Javascript in my browser for the transfer to work successfully. Of course, I've checked the IE9/Options/Security/ page in my Desktops IE9 and it shows Javascript enabled. So I set the security page of IE9 to default values and restarted IE9. Still no luck. What's going on ? Is it a software glitch in IE9 or a bit of cunning MS " Restraint of Trade ? ".

Have to say that my limited experience of Evernote was that it made my phone unstable and sapped the battery. Best bet is to find an alternative IMO.

Comments noted. But, to date, I've been using it on PB only, and battery depletion seems about usual. May be my BB Curve will be different.

Anyway solved the problem of Evernote refusing to load to the PC and the error message claiming that it was already installed.

In fact, it was already installed but wasn't showing on the Windows 7 Program list in Control Panel.

What had happened was that I'd recently installed a Wacom art tablet and Evernote came bundled with it and was installed with the "Bamboo dock" software - the EN icon only shows on the PC desktop when you open the Bamboo software for use. I presume that because it was embedded in the Bamboo dock software it wouldn't qualify for a separate listing as a standalone app in the Windows program listing.

I have to say, judging by the volume of complaints on the forums originating from Evernote customers, particularly in relation to malfunctions occurring after main software updates, it would appear that are somewhat more unfortunate than other software publishers as regards the number of unexpected random errors that can occur. I also get the impression that they are a bit of a one man band and rely on users to identify the difficulties rather than extensive testing. You can, to an extent, understand that approach, in that use of EN spans a huge number of devices, browsers and operating systems.

Apart from that it works well on the PB and win 7 and interfaces with MS One note on the PC, which is what I wanted.

So, one problem solved, all that remains getting the EN web page capture/URL capture working on PB and desktop and getting sound files (Wav) embeded in a Evernote notebook page to load-up in the PC version of Evernote (Must be a sync problem).

Solved ! URL embedding and sound files on PC desktop. With the EN program running on the PC (As opposed to just accessing the EN account in the Cloud using IE9 browser, which is what I had been doing before today) sound files appear as normal and playback OK and I'm able to see the full EN toolbar now, which includes a function to embed a URL hyperlink in the EN notebook page.

Next job, to see if I can find and use the web clipper embedded in the PC version of EN.

Unfortunately, the PB version of EN does not include an embedded or bundled web clipper, so I'm still looking for one that is compatible with OCX. Searches of the PB's cloud-based "App world" don't show anything under "Web clipper" or "Web-page clipper". Further, the additional Android Dolphin browser I have installed on PB doesn't appear to have a built-in web clipper.

I think its worth spending a little time on this because this EN medium along with MS Onenote is such a powerful tool.

Postscript2

Tried, unsuccessfully, to invoke the IE9 web clipper allegedly embedded in EN, using both right-click or select, right-click. Nothing doing.

The pop-up menus show references to MS OneNote but not to EN.

Simlarly, the IE9 toolbar shows no reference to EN whilst looking at a general web page. However, the EN toolbar in the EN PC application (Which also displays on my PC through the default browser IE9) shows a web - clipping preferences entry in the "Tools" drop-down menu. So, I suspect the clipper is included and installed with EN for PC, but that there is a link to IE9 that's missing.

I think I've found what the problem is.

On checking the Windows 7 Default application list (Through either control panel or IE9 Options, I see that EN is not listed as an alternative to MS Onenote, whereas, Chrome, which I've also got installed on the desktop, is listed as an alt for IE9.

I can only think that this is again down to the fact that I'm using a version of EN which is embedded in Wacom Bamboo rather than the standalone version.

So, worst case solution for IE9, is un-install Bamboo, install standalone EN, and re-install Bamboo hoping that it gives the option to exclude the embedded EN from the install (I can't remember. if it allowed that). That should ensure that EN gets the appropriate Windows 7 Registry entries and then shows-up in the Windows 7 installed program and default program lists.

Alternatively, I could just confine myself to using the Chrome browser when accessing EN on the Desktop and download a separate Android-based web clipper to work with that.

That can wait 'till tomorrow.

Suspect that an "Over-active" sync function is resposnible for depleting your battery - you can reduce the frequency via the "Tools" menu ( Ranges once every 15minutes to once a week) and de-select "sync in background").

Half-way there now.

An option in Bamboo allowed me to uninstall the EN embedded in Bamboo from the Desktop without having to remove Bamboo entirely. So I did that and re-booted the machine and then attempted to install EN (standalone version) on the desktop. Success !. This was no longer blocked and installed OK.

Evernote now appears with a desktop icon and in the Windows 7 installed program list in Control Panel and now, with IE9 running, if I right-click in the browser window, the drop down menu now includes the entries "Add to Evernote 4" and "New Note" as well as the entry for Microsoft OneNote "Send to Onenote".

However, when I click on either "Add to Evernote 4" or "New Note" I get an error message saying that the EN active X component has failed to initialise. So I played around with the active X references in IE9's Internet Options, tried opening EN and IE9 together and tpgether as administrator. Still not working and then found this web reference to the problem:-

http://discussion.ev...te-4-for-https/

So looks like its an EN active X module that hasn't been updated.

Another case of junior code scribblers with paralysis of the forearm.

EN's indigenous embedded web clipper for IE9 is having link problems yet, I've just established that the equivalent EN clipper embedded in Outlook is working perfectly.

Weird.

But on the other issue (Now solved) about embedding applications in other software so that it does not show-up in the Windows program listing, that's got to be a MAJOR SECURITY FLAW IN WINDOWS and I'm surprised that it hasn't been exploited yet.
