help with warning lights on dash please

Featured Replies

l have had my present x reg fabia 4 years and the power steering light has been on but always worked.engine management light always on but never been a problem.now about 6 weeks ago 2brake warning lights came on and have stopped on.the car recently passed its mot and would appreciate any advice at all to what and try and do.does it need a diagnostic test or can check anything.thank you again.

Having a dash light on is an MOT failure, so that is curious in itself...

I thought the Fabia only had the 1 brake warning light, to which other do you refer?

I thought it was later this year that lights on became a fail, my car passed the MoT with the Airbag light on in December at a main dealer with just an advisory.

To the OP getting the car checked for fault codes would be the way to start, look in the diagnostics forum and see if there is anyone near you with vcds who could check your car.

thank you for your time and replies .l thought the same about it being a mot failure.sorry but the other light a circle with a triangle in it is to do with the abs brake light being on.with the power steering and engine management lights on as well and even though the car runs well its 13 years old now do you think it could cost more than the car is worth.any advice is much appreciated thank you.

With older cars it's not about how much it is worth, it's about it being cheaper to repair what you have than replace it with something that's potentially got more issues.

If you'd investigated each issue as they came up rather than ignoring them it's be a lot easier as you now have multiple faults to try and diagnose.

Firstly when was it last serviced and what's the overall history like? I can't imagine many garages servicing a car with warning lights and not telling you something was wrong. Most would hook it up to a diagnostic as part of the service.

Start with the PAS, you say it works, does the weight change or it kick in/out? Could be a duff battery, a duff earth, low fluid levels, a duff fuse or the angle sensor. Do you notice the dash/headlights dim significantly when you do parking maneuvers in the dark?

As for the brakes have you checked the fluid level? I don't know what specific model or light you have on but do you know if you have a brake pad wear sensor? Are you running the same size tyres all round?

EML is a very general light, you'll need the fault codes reading.

If you have access to a laptop/netbook then buy a generic VCDS lead for a fiver and download VCDS lite and read the fault codes yourself.

Spending a few minutes of your time and about a fiver should give you an idea of what you're looking at in terms of work. Writing the car off as worth less than the cost of repairs will certainly cost you a lot more.
