Phone connection by wire (MDI/AUX)

Featured Replies

Ok, so when i bought my car i thought I really really needed an MDI kit. In fact I found the aux wire bearable and now that I can convert AAC to MP3 quickly and easily im happy with the SD card and the MDI has become more of a potential convenience.

So now I really do value phone connection - with te slight reservation that I'd prefer not to have to leave my bluetooth on all the time as the battery already discharges faster than I'd like. Not a problem when I'm actually in the car as I can charge it but a pest the rest of the day (and I definitely don't want to be activating it and deactivating it just for car journeys).

So, the other day when for a change I was using the aux I had a call and the sound obviously came through the speakers. I managed to have a very brief call with the phone on the passenger seat - it was pretty crap, had to shout, got feedback, etc but it got me thinking.

Is it possible to fit/code a mic in the same way as people are doing for the blacklines, and it would work with the phone plugged into either MDI or aux? What happens if you have MDI only and a call comes in?

If need be i'll put some cash aside until I can get a Bluetooth kit - but as said, it's not just the cash, it's the preference not o activate bluetooth too. In all honesty with so many cars having iPod preparation and so many iPhone users its a little surprising that this option hasn't been factored in before. Perhaps if they ever get this 'universal charger' malarky sorted it'll finally happen.......

I leave bluetooth enabled all the time on my iPhone4 and I don't think its a a huge battery drain. But with iPhones you pretty much have to recharge every day or two anyway cos the battery is so puny. I gave up trying to use the MDI socket to recharge the phone in the car and got a decent lighter-socket charger instead.
