Heater blowing cold air around the gear stick

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, new so please be gentle.

bought a skoda octavia 1.9 TDI elegance model. have to say absolutely loving the car. registered in december 2003 which is strange why not wait until january but heh im rambling already.

Car runs great, no complains other than the heating wasnt working as intended. changed the pollen filter and it had a positive change for the warm air coming out of the top vents. at least i can get warm air now.

Problem is though im not getting any warm air coming out of the vents lower down around leg area. Infact im getting cold air blowing in through here. its not just cold air it feels like air conditioned air. As you can imagine this is terribly annoying and ruins a great drive.

I have searched a few forums and found little information. I think the cold air is coming out from below the passenger side down low but cant be 100% sure, you just feel the constant cold around the gear stick area and on your lower legs.

Has anyone else come across this problem, maybe even share some similar situations and solutions if possible. Any help I could get would be great guys

Cheers.

You should be able to find a few threads on here about similar issues. Dodgy heating/ ventilation seems not uncommon. Had similar problem in my 2010 vRS. I'm afraid it's probably a garage job and a new temperature sensor or two.

Sarge.

I had similar on the old car - apparently the bluetooth phone fitter dislodged some pipework, easily rectified.

Thanks for the replys guys. I work in a college which has a motorvehicle department. My next step is to sweet talk one of the lecturers into letting the students take it apart a bit and see if there is anything obvious. I would be happy if i found a pipe or hole just to block it up. that probably sounds a bit lazy :)

Heres a thought, is the glovebox vent open, this gets fed with a constant supply of air condition air which might make its way of the openings around the glovebox

First thing I went for. it was open at the time and I closed it. didnt help though. the glove box is a stream of air you can feel against your hand. its hard to explain but what im feeling isnt a stream of air more just surrounding cold air if that doesnt sound too silly.

My 06 plate 1.9 diesel L&K had this issue,

my 59 plate 1.4 tsi Elegance had this issue,

My 62 plate 1.4 tsi SE+ has this issue.

Sorry I don't have a fix Vesuvius but it seems to be a trait.

I assumed that it was down to poor insulation around that area. I've kinda gotten used to it as its only an issue in winter, made worse by my habit of driving with my left hand on gear stick. Also, don't think its as much of an issue as my current model doesn't have the arm rest ;)

He He. a man of my own heart. I too have the hand on gearstick while driving syndrome.

I've noticed the same thing. changing gear is like putting your hand in the freezer. I put the heating on to the foot-well, makes no difference. However I've noticed that the footwell air isnt as warm as the vent air. a puzzle.

I'll check the glove box vent (what a daft idea)
