Simple Pikey Mod trial - VRS

Featured Replies

Have read with interest the various threads on VRS 'Pikey Mod'.

As an experiment before setting off today I took the offside bumper cover off to expose the intercooler to a bit more air.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but I'm pretty convinced that it made a significant difference in torque available right through the range.

This simple trial has convinced me enough to go ahead with Pikey mods 1 & 2.

:)

I am not skeptical but today was a nice cool and misty/rainy day...

I think it may of been the placebo effect and down to the engine loving wether.

The most pronounced effect should be achieved during hot weather, where having airflow would have a good impact on performance.

The Furby sure likes a bit of colder weather :D

I know, she felt remapped this morning compared to the hot weekend :D

walkie, it is no myth the car does pull better in every gear, certainly revs more freely.

Mod 1 did little to help me over the hot weekend

Ok I take back what I said. I am skeptical.

I believe in the summer it may help a little, as the hot air can escape.

But I still doubt it would make a 'significant difference' in torque available in every gear on a normal cold day.

I know yesturday when the whether was cooler I got in my car for work and thought wow she feels great today. As apposed to the warmer days we've been having recently.

I am sure if you have no pikey mods then one day someone pikey'd up your car you probably wouldnt notice a difference.

I am sorry, its just what I think. But hey I am still doing the pikey mod

sorry gotta agree with you there walkie

You Furby owners are just a bunch of Pikeys aren't you !

Say what you mean, mate, don't hold back ;)

Pikey-I will keep the car more responsive when you'd normally get heatsoak. My Furby is standard so I don't get bad heatsoak on a cool day. I can imagine on a hot day it would happen, and it does feel slower.

Don't think Walkie / myself think the mod isn't worth doing - it is ;) as the hot air gets trapped so allowing it to escape must be a good thing :D

I'm probably visiting a DIY chain near me shortly to purchase some mesh ;)

This might just be me, but getting more air to the intercooler may well increase cooling etc. But surely on a hot day you're driving through hot ambient air???

Car's could well feel slower on a hot day simply because the air is more sparse and on a cold & slightly damp the air is very dense and therefore can be compressed more efficiantly...

@KrazyKev - yep you're right :)

Thing is, on a hot day (say 30 deg C) the underbonnet temps will be a lot higher still, say 40-45 deg C. The effectiveness of the intercooler is very much reduced when the temperature difference is not that great between it and the air it's surrounded by.

Making the air escape into the wheel arch makes the air move through it. So even if the temperature is 30 deg C outside, that's the air which will cool the intercooler, rather than the slowly warming up underbonnet air, which has nowhere to escape (well it does, but not as effectively as a through-put into the arch :)

The real reason for this mod is to reduce/avoid heatsoak - it will be most effective at speed as there is no forced cooling, but it will open up a good path for the air to flow from front intake (near foglight) through the intercooler and back out again. The last step is the one that's missing in standard form.

How about this? Just a bit of a pain as u'd have to do it whilst sitting in traffic or something...

 lmao, I was just thinking that! What are the odds, just about to post

'Carry a water gun in your boot and spray the intercooler'

Thats skodaguys car isnt it?

Yea it is. That pic was taken just before he took it out on the strip at Modified Nationals at the weekend to do some 1/8th Times...

What did he get Kev? Hows your fan club going? :P

With a fully loaded car ( all camping stuff on back seats and boot ) i think the quickest was 8.6 seconds 0-60 i dont remember the 1/8th times...

It's a great idea - just need a chav, rollerblades and a little tale about how you can increase bhp on his car by spraying like that

What's the cooling per 'spray' like  - soz couldnt resist ;)

Cool idea :D

Ahh u seee, the water in the gun is partially frozen, so very cold water...

Remote control waterpistol!

gotta be worth a go?

could feed to it from a bottle inside the air conditioned glove box.

 - I'm thinking water tank in the boot :D

Jokes aside I like the front grille bit, got a full size pic?

I love that front grille? how much and where from!?
