Superb temperature guage

Featured Replies

I have a 2003 Skoda Superb Comfort 1.9 tdi that has done 92000 miles. The temperature guage is playing up - over the years it has been very accurate always staying on the midway points - never increasing or decreasing. But now, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When it is working, it is always at the midway point but other times, it's sitting at a big fat zero.

My garage says it's an expensive job and they say the temperature guage alone can't be replaced and it needs a whole new dashboard containing all the instruments.

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Welcome Bob,

The coolant temperature sensors failing across the whole of the VAG range is common, it’s a relatively cheap part at £35 ish (use a genuine sensor as aftermarket ones are not renowned for being great).

It’s a 5 min job to change.

Don't'cha just love garages who will happily fund their Equity membership on the back of a bit of drama :|

Unless of course they've eliminated the sensor and confirmed it's your instrument cluster. In which one has to wonder the justification for saying you need a whole new dashboard.

I'm with Gizmo.

It'll be interesting to find out how close the garage's diagnosis was once you've got it fixed.

Thanks Guys, your replies are very welcome. I had also been getting problems with the emission control as well and when they did the diagnosis, it was showing that the water temperature gauge was the fault. They replaced it with a new non-Skoda gauge but that didn't solve the problem - so I had two problems (emission control & temp gauge) at the same time. The temperature gauge was then replaced with a Skoda gauge but still both problems continued. The garage said there are two temperature gauges on the Superb. After further investigation, they couldn't find any further problems but still both problems continued. Then about three months later, the emission control sorted itself out and I forgot about it. It's been several weeks since the emission control corrected itself.

But still the temperature gauge problem continued and is still there.

Is the temperature gauge the same as the sensor previously mentioned. Does anyone know if there are two sensors.

Thanks

Bob
