Boot floor collapsed! Any ideas...

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Was fitting my subwoofer a couple of weeks ago now and i noticed that the boot floor had a slight crack all the way down it.

With the weight of the subwoofer it has got worse and has decided to collapse :S

so i need a replacement! i work in a timber yard so was wondering if 12mm plywood would be strong enough to hold?

Or if anyone has any other ideas?

Cheers :D

if you mean the steel boot pan i would get it properly replaced as its exposed to the elements underneath the car and may effect the next mot with it being so close to seat belt mounts.

if you mean the mdf board under the carpet then ply would be fine

yeh sorry i meant the mdf/hardboard cover :D cheers for the reply

good good lol and 12mm ply will probs be stronger than the thin mdf cover

12mm ply will be a lot stronger than the standard mdf, use the old one as a template to cut the new one to shape.

yeh thats what i thought. how do you think i should go about securing the plywood to the actual carpet so that when i lift it the plywood comes up as well? im thinking velcro maybe?

I would personally use thinner than 12mm if possible as I think it might give a raised effect. I am sure even 6mm ply will be tougher than the original floor. Usually the spare wheel/toolbox kit underneath supports the weight.

yeh thats right i had the spare wheel out and i put it back in this morning and it doesnt dip now haha :D as the toolbox supports it. but i see what you mean about the ply sitting higher

If you still want to do it, just stick the carpet to the ply wood with carpet adhesive (available from all diy stores!). Thats good enough to stick it, and remain in place for as long as you'll own the car mate.
