noise when turning

Featured Replies

about a week ago I noticed a rubber squeaky sound when turning at low speeds, this has now progressed into a knocking sound, only seems to happen when turning at slow speeds?

any ideas what to check for, would rather have a look around before taking to the garage.

cheers

SWMBO Altea has just broken the spring on a mcpheteson strut- either pot holes or speed bumps,! Getting a dunk, dunk sound when we steer at low speeds. Is this how yours sounds?

Wishbones hitting the inner edge of the console due to bushes being totally shot, ARB bushes shot so ARB moves, drop links where the nut is loose where the lower bolt passes through the ARB end, spring as per above or it could also be a wheel bearing but I'd expect more of a constant drone that got worse when turning rather than only when turning. It's not a definitive list but it's a good starting point.

Either way you need to have a look sooner rather than later and that'll be a wheel off and car on stand job. Most of those are simple DIY jobs and have a guide in the Technical Guides section, if you need advice on how to check any of the above then ask :)

thanks for replies,I dont know alot about cars, but do like to have a go when I can :)

littleade and avalon I will have a look for them.

I spent 20mins on my back earlier looking under the car, cv gators all like fine and no oil on them.

had a look at the drop links, rubber bits seem ok, not sure if this is normal but one rotated left to right easily and the other would not move? is this just because how the car was parked? also the top bolt stuck out alot more on one side that the other? maybe they just used a shorter bolt but thought I would mention that :)

any help on what to look for would be a great help,

Thanks, Stu

Constant velocity joint suspect.

My nearside started off with similar sound, until with use, it turned into a knocking sound when turning.

In the end just before renewal, the knocking could be heard on an overrun going down-hill without any throttle being used, or turning the steering wheel.

My CV gaiters were looking good, it was the joint that was knackered.
