Painting small areas of bodywork - Advice

Featured Replies

Hi guys, having owned Fellys etc for a few years now I'm becoming quite accustomed to bodywork patching up. I've currently got a couple of relatively small areas in primer on the pick up, waiting for top/finishing coat (weather allowing!). In the past I've used brush application which tbh isn't great but does the job. However at least one of the areas I now have I think is a little too big for brush & I'm thinking aerosol application. Equally I want to avoid having to spray a quarter panel or so in each case so was considering the following:

- Mask around the areas in question and spray, leaving the masking edge to be removed afterwards or

- Make a template with an aperture cut to suit and then spray through that to avoid leaving a defined line on the bodywork.

Any related advice would be really welcome from those more knowledge than me in the art of bodywork or equally someone that's had to do similar at some stage, from the DIY perspective. Sorry forgot to add non-metallic & no lacquer coat.

Many thanks,

Rob ;)

mask around the edge of the panel, never paint up to a masked edge, once masking is removed it leaves a hard and very noticeable edge/ridge

Have you actually considered a small air brush kit...

Hi, I hadn't to be fair. Will have to do a bit more research on this option to see how workable it might be & assoc cost etc. ;)

Personally if it was me, I wouldn't mask. I would just flat the area around it, Spray the area, lacquer, sand the new lacquer then buff with a wool mop then refine back.

Thanks that's along the lines I was thinking. ;)
