strut top bushes knackered ?

hi guys im trying to track down the cause of what i would describe as lazy steering.

there is a gap of 10mm between the upper part of the strut and the metal of the car as seen under the bonnet , also when turning the wheels while stationary they tend to move in different directions ie one to the left and one to the rear.

i have no idea if this is normal behavior or if they are just fubar , any help appreciated.
