Insurance renewal & Blackvue drive recorders - disappointed

Featured Replies

I found out today that because the Blackvue range of cameras is not on the VSIB approved list (yet ROadhawk is....) I will not get any discount on my insurance premium with the Flux (can't blame them as its ultimately Equity Redstar). I did get a £15 goodwill reduction but still sort of felt a little flat at the effort I have put in to reduce the chances of me being the victim of a "crash'n'claim" incident.

Whilst I ultimately didn't get the two blackvues to save hundreds on my insurance, it would have been nice to have a fair amount knocked off. I have emailed the VSIB to see why the Blackvue drive recorders do not feature on their approved list. I'll be interested to find out the results.

Still - The Flux have done the mongrel renewal for £500 which isn't bad given the nature of the beast.

That isn't too bad but would be interested to know why Blackvue's aren't listed as approved.

I think i'm going to try Flux for my renewal as currently paying about over the odds (would be roughly £1000 a year) with Direct Line just for a few mods at the age of 32 with about 8 years no claims as well and only 3 points in nearly 15 years of driving!!

I will contact them now as we have been told that if you purchase one from us it is approved.

Yes - I know "approved" can be from various bodies which is why I checked the Flux were referring to the VSIB. Having never heard of the VSIB, I wasn't too sure who they were and how much punch they held in regard to insurance companies treatment of drive recorders.

Apparently crash-for-cash alone adds around £70-£90 to an average premium, you would have thought a correctly fitted and operational dash cam would effectively eliminate any claim of that nature and knock that cost off at the very least.

It seems insurers are desperate to tell you why your premium costs are rising, but not quite as desperate as they are to avoid reducing it.

Any joy? I didn't get any response from VSIB on this.

Question - if you have a single vehicle accident where you are at fault, will you be happy to provide the camera footage?

This came up on another forum recently..

Thanks

Simple answer - yes. :) Also, if it was my fault, I would be admitting as such, with or without the footage. It's there for when the boot is on the other foot.

Fair enough.

On another forum recently I was asked about the possibility of offering discount against having a camera installed, I posed the question

above, the consensus was, they no longer wanted the camera fitted in their vehicle. From an insurers perspective, if you were going to offer a discount based on having a camera fitted, the customer would need to produce the camera evidence in the event of a claim.

Perhaps your answer shows the difference between a forum for fairly cheap RWD sports car which attract a younger audience and Briskoda.

Personally though, I would not want a camera fitted in my own vehicle.

Why not?

That's quite an interesting statement, from someone who probably knows more than us about insurance.

I really like having the camera in and it's been very handy in two little bumps where the third party has not even tried to argue who was at fault once the footage was seen.

Me neither.

Chances are even in the event of a valid non-fault claim it could be used against you in some way. There are such stories from the US on such cases, especially where what the driver is actually doing isnt shown.

What's the pic here against the 380HD all about then:

I don't like a few of our site sponsors due to some of the things that happen when you get quotes, but that's not singling out any of them as it's personal opinion.

Given demand for these, are they being stolen yet or does everyone remove them?

Mine stays in, but then I don't live in a bad area, and they would only get the unit due to it being hardwired in

Cheeze - that is interesting. Approved by Flux yet when I got quote - not on the list? Well odd

Given the colour, size and location of these devices, your local chav would have to be looking quite hard at each car as he walks down the road. They're not as "hi viz" asSatNav (for example).

If the ring around the lens was black instead of silver, it would be almost completely camouflaged.

Bit of Sharpie pen and job done!

I think the problem arises if they look at all the footage recorded, of course if you were able to edit out the rest of the drive it wouldnt be an issue but video of you hooning for 10 minutes before some muppet pulled out on you isnt something i would want anyone else to have

Surely that problem is fixed simply by not hooning around and doing silly stuff on public roads.

In an ideal world perhaps but I didn't buy the cars I have not to be able to enjoy them if conditions permit. There is a time and a place for everything
