Clay Bar 101 for a virgin

Featured Replies

I am sure this will help others and would massively help me out please can you give me some guidance on the below:

1. Any prerequisites or prep other than a ph balanced wash with AG Shampoo

2. Which Clay Bar?

3. Heard somewhere you require some form of lubricant to aid the clay bar action if so what?

4. How much pressure do you apply, i know this is a relative term depending on physicality but just a rough guide, some examples analagies etc.

5. Circular motion, straight lines or other action

6. Period of time on a specific area (one, a few passes or lots)

7. Any other after treatments other than another wash then wax / sealer? should there be a drying time inbetween?

8. Can the clay bar be reused or do you chuck it after 1 aplication?

Many thanks in antisipation of the forum detailers input / advice.

Personally, if I am claying my car I I wouldn't worry overly about what shampoo to use as you need to remove everything from the paintwork anyway. Prior to claying, I would give a full wash including going around the car with Autosmart Tardis/Autoglym Tar remover or equivalent to get rid of as much crap (tar spots, tree sap amongst others) from the paintwork as I can. This will also help make your clay bar last longer IMO.

2. Which Clay Bar?

I use Bilt Hamber (see below for reason) medium bar but have read good things about cheap Ebay/Chinese equivalent.

3. Heard somewhere you require some form of lubricant to aid the clay bar action if so what?

The first clay bar I used was Meguiars Clay System which came with QD (Quick Detailer) but I've changed to the above as it only needs water for lubricant. Others have used cheap hair shampoo with water as lubricant.

4. How much pressure do you apply, i know this is a relative term depending on physicality but just a rough guide, some examples analagies etc.

How would I quantify that :D

5. Circular motion, straight lines or other action

No right or wrong I would say, just make sure you touch every part of the paintwork.

6. Period of time on a specific area (one, a few passes or lots)

Only move to another panel once there is literally no friction between the clay bar and paintwork. Another method to check would be to put your hand in a plastic bag and run your finger tips over the paintwork... this will hep feel for any imperfections.

7. Any other after treatments other than another wash then wax / sealer? should there be a drying time inbetween?

Nope, but I wouldn't carry on with the next stage without drying my car.

8. Can the clay bar be reused or do you chuck it after 1 aplication?

I keep using the clay bar until I can no longer fold it and get a 100% clean face. Once it reaches this stage I will keep that piece but only for my alloys and windscreen.

I've added my answers above. Others may have differing opinions or choices...... hope it helps :)

I am sure this will help others and would massively help me out please can you give me some guidance on the below:

1. Any prerequisites or prep other than a ph balanced wash with AG Shampoo

Wash well with detox shampoo (Farecla G3 Detox) and fairy liquid ... Deionize with Iron X and detar with Autosmart Tardis or equivalent THEN Clay after another wash and rinse

2. Which Clay Bar? Bilt Hamber Clay ...It uses just water as the lubricant..The best clay IMO

3. Heard somewhere you require some form of lubricant to aid the clay bar action if so what? Water only with BH Clay

4. How much pressure do you apply, i know this is a relative term depending on physicality but just a rough guide, some examples analagies etc. Not much needed

5. Circular motion, straight lines or other action Mixture..Usuallly straight lines..depends on where on the car you are

6. Period of time on a specific area (one, a few passes or lots) Just a wipe over until it feels smooth..Couple of passes..more lower down

7. Any other after treatments other than another wash then wax / sealer? should there be a drying time inbetween? No drying needed as it uses water as the lube...See above

8. Can the clay bar be reused or do you chuck it after 1 aplication? No..Throw it away..It will be filthy

Awesome cheers guys. Will give it ago then, whats the worst that can happen

Any tips on where to buy Bilt hamber Clay then ? Any discount codes etc.?

By the way im not trying to take work away from you professionals out there i would always recomend taking it to a detailers

for a proper job this is purely to satisfy my curiosity im not going to be doing it for anyone else. Im sure knowing

how to do it properly and doing it properly are two completely different things and i don't think my sausage fingers will get

me anywhere near the same results as a pro.

P.S. i have autoglym tar spot remover and i found it to be utterly useless at removing tar spots that litter the lower half

of the sides of my red VRS. Its probably due to them being there for so many years. I find the only way is to scratch at them

with finger nail repeatedly until you break the surface then the liquid seams to be able to remove the remnants.
