checked the fuse its not that anyone?

It might be the reverse switch on the gearbox

for both items to have failed i would be looking at reverse switch on gearbox

okie kokie cheers both. it randomly worked once or twice today so loose connection/broken wire is what i was thinking

Happened to me, was the wiring at the reverse light switch connector. Just need to remove airbox gubbins and you'll prob see a broken wire (water gets at it easily there I think). And even if it turns out to be the switch itself, they are cheap. I bought one thinking it was the switch and it was only £15, but when I went to change it, I found the broken wire.

Did you get to the bottom of this issue?

In 11 years the car has probably rotted away, died a death or long since been sold on. Is the forumite even around?

Edit: to answer my own question, OP not seen since 2015.
