number plates and the law....

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Ive had my Fabia Vrs for about a month, which I bought from an established local independent dealer.

Got pulled over by the police the other day and told that my front windows are too dark (£30 fine, fair enough, il just peel the film off...) but was also advised that my front plate is illegal, as it is too small and doesnt have the kite mark and manufacturers postcode in the corner. Its font is as normal, no daft backgrounds or anything, just the plate is smaller and im guessing the lettering might be a little bit smaller than a normal plate.

The car came like this, which the officers seemed quite surprised at, what with it being from a well known local dealership.

I dont mind removing the window tint but the number plate adds to the effect of the front grill imo, and i dont really want to change it. My main question is would it fail an mot with this plate on? And if i were to get a proper full sized plate made up, any ideas where i would put it without blocking up the wide-mouth? Tempted to leave it be and see if i get pulled for it with the tints removed.......

Arguably, you could fail on 6.3.2.c , or for various reasons under 6.2.4.

OTOH cars which don't have a solid surface that a plate can be screwed or bolted to have been passing MOTs since the 1950s. An image search for "E-type Jaguar" will certainly turn up a couple with stick-on plates.

Think the law was changed in 2001 for plate makers name and BS number , so since stick on plates dont have these then is going to be hard to get around.

Cant you get a normal plate to stick in that position , they can normally be flexed a little??

Alternately how about a square plate like an Evo for example

Thanks guys, never thought about the square plate route, might get a normal one made up and see where I can put it. Wouldn't mind a stick-on, but that probs wouldn't solve the problem, cba getting pulled all the time lol

I found that provided the font and plate size are legal you wont get bothered come mot

Just to be clear when i said stick on plate i meant sticking a proper plate on , I much prefer than rather than drilling holes and having screws in it

Search on here for a member called sausage roll. He had/ has a vRS with a wide mouth and a square plate IIRC. Not seen him active for ages but you might find an image or two somewhere.

From the pic posted the font doesn't appear to be standard Charles Wright font as per the regs.

As others have said, a square plate would probably be a good compromise.

I have seen stick on plates with a bs number and makers name on them. But where you would get one I don't know.
