Would the silicone sealant that TL Darby gave me to seal the sump work on the pipe also, if I were to smear it over in a thin layer...as it turns into a rubber?

in the short term, you can fettle a replacement gasket from an old cornflake packet. has worked for me countless times in the past as a temporary fix... just get the proper one asap.

would a frosties packet work fine?

Has to be cornflakes

absolutely must be cornflakes... although frosties are GRRRRREAT too. fortified with vitamins and iron dont you know.

  • Author

Thats true. The iron should reinforce the gasket :)

And only genuine kelloggs

Seriously though back onto the topic. I have called around motor factors and none can get me a gasket for the oil return pipe to the sump. They all keep saying its a dealer only gasket blah blah. Would something like instant gasket be a suitable alternative? As long as it's oil proof and creates a air tight seal then surely it would work? I'm a bit nervous about using kelloggs or the halfords gasket paper stuff as I don`t see how it will be oil proof. I thought it was only for use within the inlet system?

The kelloggs box is only for a temp measure, it allows you to squash the pipe into something (thin cardboard gasket) when you do it up and it removes any uneveness between the sump and return pipe.

It would prob last 5 years if it was never disturbed, but then again might only last a couple of weeks.

I wouldn't use an instant gasket there as the stuff no matter how thinly you use it tends to "squidge" out and can end up blocking the oil return, and if you don't use enough of it, then it won't seal anyway.

Are you sure the old gasket is missing ? Mine stayed stuck to the sump and I reused it without a problem.

When I took it off it looked like it had deteriorated and broken up.

Just wait a few days and get the proper gasket fella, not worth risking it. I was told by someone in the know that the VVT is the first thing to start rattling, that might be what you were hearing, fingers crossed you've not screwed it.

Got the pickup pipe replaced today and sigh of relief. Engine sounds normal and Turbo is spooling fine! I must be very lucky.

What condition was the old one in?

Hope you treated it to some nice oil.

You were very lucky buddy.

Bet that is a relief.

Sent from my Galaxy S3.

The pickup was completely clogged to hell. I`ve put some Mobil 1 0W40 in because its supposed to have cleaning agents in the oil and its good stuff all round. I'm going to do another oil change soon though because there was alot of crap in the engine, the previous owners obviously hadn`t kept on top of the oil changes. Also I don`t know whether its because I have changed the pickup pipe or because the engine has been cold for weeks, but my fiancee said the exhaust or engine made a deep grunting/growling sound when I put my foot down a bit, she says it sounds different to what it has before from the outside. I couldn`t hear anything out of the norm from the drivers seat so I can`t comment.

Been using the same stuff on mine too for 6 years.

I`ve just realised on the Mobil site they say the Skoda is 3.5 litres of oil. I put all 5 litres in the car :/. Will this cause serious problems or will the car just burn off what it doesn`t need?

Are you joking ??

will it burn off what it doesn't need just made me lol lots !!!!!

Overfilling is an issue check dipstick to see level

Octy vrs is around 4.5 litres Inc filter

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

4.33 litres IIRC?

Doesn't Mobil 1 come in 4 litre containers?

Always used to.

Lol you're some boy OP ;)

As others have said check your dip stick, I wouldn't consider it the end of the world as tbh I'd think of changing the oil and filter again after a couple of runs, make sure all the crap and any loose stuff that might have made its way to the sump again is gone.

On that note I hope you spent ages cleaning the sump out properly, getting rid of the old sealant, and used as thin a bead of new stuff as possible? If not I'd whip the sump off again and do so mate.

Glad it's running well now too :)

I'm sure when I got the recommended stuff from VW it was 5L and it didn`t give me any running issues. Does this engine not use oil anyway? according to the skoda manual. I gave the sump and block side a real good clean up yes and got all the old gasket off, also gave the sump a real good clean out with boiling hot water and washing up liquid + wire brush.

I've bought a chemistry jug set off ebay so that I can correctly measure out how much oil I drain from the sump. :). So should it be 4.33 or 4.5L in the sump??

Are you being serious? You have an oil measuring device built into the car..... It's called a dipstick, I suggest you use it before firing 5litres of oil in willy nilly
