Fault code P1296........

Featured Replies

Can any one help me with this fualt code please?

No engine light was on as we are trying to find out why it is running rough. Could be an old fault that wasnt cleared and has nothing to do with the way its running, but if any one could enlighten me as to what the fault code is id appreciate it.

This code has now been cleared.

Hi my 2001 octy vrs was doing the exact same thing. The only difference was that my temp gauge isnt really moving. I put a coolant temp sensor in it and that didnt cure it. Im assuming its the thermostat now. Next was some plugs to see if it stopped the missfire. I replaced them and my miss fires gone. As for the code it came up the same on mine. It was something to do with yhe fueling i was told. Wether this is right i have no idea.

Sorry just googled it and its coolant system malfunction, commonly caused by thermostat or coolant temp sensor

17704/P1296/004758 - Error in Mapped Cooling System

Possible Symptoms

  • Cold start issues

Possible Causes

  • Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62) faulty
  • Coolant Thermostat faulty

Possible Solutions

  • Check Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62)
  • Check Coolant Thermostat

Special Notes

  • Check the stored Freeze Frame data with this fault code. Freeze Frame information will be found in the fault code description (if the module supports it) or in Generic OBD-II if the vehicle complies with those regulations.
    • Freeze Frame data stored at -40 °C is generally an indication of a faulty ECT or wiring.
    • Freeze Frame data stored at +140 °C is generally an indication of a faulty ECT or wiring.
    • Freeze Frame data stored with in the 60-80 °C range is an indication that the vehicle was close to, but not within, the cooling systems normal operation range. The Thermostat itself or Cooling system components may be at fault.

Change the thermostat for a genuine one.

Another fault mine had when i picked it up, changed the temp sensor and it was still there. got the stat out and i looked fine, but stuck a new on in anyway and now its bang on.

Had same code changed thermostat and temp sensor, big difference in heat but engine management light keeps coming back????

Did you used an OEM sensor or a pattern part ebay/GSF/TPS one

Pass? Mechanic is good and sure he used genuine part. I noticed a sweet burning smell comin from under bonnet, maybe a leak in coolant system? Could this cause em light to come on

Is it the same code come up again???

If he has changed these 2 things and you are still getting the code i would take it back to him, the stat/Sensor normally a good fix for this code, Sweet smell could be. best way to tell if its a coolant leak is check your level, start the car and check all the hoses for water leaks, once its warm shut off and check again.

Another thing is did he clear the code for you, Some places will just fix whats wrong and not clear the code from the ECU.

It really is advised with this one to got OEM for parts, My mechanic says he uses genuine parts but in actual fact he uses repo parts which are normally as good as genuine but in the case of the stat and the sensor is not true. (dont mean to bad mouth him as he is a good tech and really helpful)

Is your temp gauge getting to 90 and staying?

Yes getting to 90 and staying. Stat was defo faulty as has made loads if difference. His fault code reader doesnt do vag cars apparently just gives you a code. Could this b why fault keeps coming back?

get someone local with Vag-Com to scan and clear any codes. take it for a drive, scan it again if the codes pop up again then look into whats up.

Had car back with mechanic for a full service thismorning. Turns out the thermostat fixed it as was a different code this time (lambda sensor) more spending but atleast one problem is fixed. Chuffed as fell in love with me skoda and didnt want to part with her.

Did he clear the code and give the car a drive or are you just getting the Lamba replaced??

He cleared it and came back on whilst driving home (couple of mile) assuming gonna be the same code. Yea jus gonna get it changed this week. Any ideas on price for sensor? Will it matter if i use genuine part or ebay jobby? I know i was told to with coolant temp sensor. cheers.

not heard if major horror storys on the O2 sensors, just make sure its not UBER cheep as you will be changing it next year too.

glad to hear your getting it sorted and they are only niggly things.

£96.51 including vat for the sensor (genuine one) and a tenner to fit it. Dearer than i was hoping! With any luck should be end of spending and can start on the cosmetics

Tenner to fit! bargain!

they are a PITA to fit.

I know hes good like that but i always give him a little extra so i know he will do it again. He charged me £140 for a FULL service last week just cant stamp me book but as i will more than likely be keeping for a while didnt bother me

Thats not bad, I know when im shopping for cars i like to see stamps, but if the book has been filled out with an invoice to prove the work has been done i never worry.

Sensor came straight out as exhaust was hot apparently. Done few miles now and fingers crossed no engine management light
