Removing error codes

Featured Replies

A mechanic told me the other day that all modern cars like the Skoda's with can bus can have faults cleared without using vag-com.

He said to disconnect the battery and then join the +ve and -ve leads together and leave for 15 mins to an hour and that would clear all codes.

Anybody else heard if this works?

It would have helped me when I managed to get a sensor wet and the car went into limo home mode, but being DSG that meant 1st only. Not even reverse!!!! Going through water which came over the bonnet didn't help

Clearing the codes solved my problem and the car had been fine since and done in excess of 20,000 miles since that day on Salisbury Plains.

How is this meant to happen? There's no power between 2 cables?

I think he was pulling your plonker

He said it would discharge the ecu clearing the codes etc.

A bit like I have to do sometimes with my router - turn it off, disconnect from mains and leave for a while. (or even my TV).

I am sceptical as well.

On older cars (1995 pug 306) disconnecting the battery for x amount of time reset the ecu and cleared the fault codes. Never heard of it working on anything modern though.

Guess it depends if the codes go into persistent or volatile storage surely?

I don't know where they go though, so can't really answer!

From what I've been told, this will drain any residual capacitance left in the system. I have heard of this in one of the Ford Forums too. However, I suspect it won't clear all faults, only those that have a threshold count.
