Buying a new CD head unit

Featured Replies

Hello

I have finally decided to buy myself a new CD head unit with USB connectivity. I've been using the standard Skoda cd player that came with my 2005 vRS. Getting fed up with the fact it has some limitations such as MP3.

Anyone know what adaptors if any i need to make it fit? i spotted two on Halfords.

Autoleads FP2000 Skoda Fabia Facia Panel (£14.99)and Fascia Adaptor FP-20-00 Skoda Fabia(£10.99). Anyone know the difference?

What cabling do i need if any?

thanks

If you buy a new headunit all the leads will come with it, they use a standard iso connector, you'll just need to swap the bullet connectors over on the power leads so it turns off with ignition and saves your radio sets etc. You'll need the fascia, but you're best getting it from skoda, better match to the dash then, plus its only £3 odd.

If you wanted to just have USB input you can get a adapter to run into the stock headunit so you can use USB sticks and AUX input.

Consider a signal booster for the radio while your at it. Also read the manual of the HU, you need to swap the perm/switched lives over on VAG as they aren't ISO.

Thanks but do you mean if I buy something like this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_878145_langId_-1_categoryId_165474#tab1

i still need to buy another adaptor in order to plug in my USB memory sticks?

No if you buy that all you need to do is get the fascia, job done.

IF all you wanted extra was USB input then you can get adapters that plug into your original headunit to allow a USB input without changing the headunit.

Thanks guys!

I will probably get a signal booster too as read somewhere the OEM Skoda cd player has a signal booster built in whether aftermarket may not.

Is this the right signal booster?

Should i need to check impedence ratings and VSWR related stuff or does that not matter in this case?

Where could I lay my hands on one of those USB input adapters?

I've seen the Connect2 type that give a 3.5mm stereo jack line-in connection plugged into the AUX[CD Changer] connection on the back of the OEM Headunit......BUT not a USB one..?

I paid about £30 for a used one I think.

Something else might that be worth considering:

As I have also been thinking about replacing the head unit (symphony) so I can attach an ipod etc, but then came across I various versions of these things...

They apparently plug into the CD changer lead (I dont have a changer but think the lead/plug for it is there) and allow you to use an ipod/mp3 player (depending which version you go for) the ipod ones I think also let you use the Cd controls to skip through tracks. ?
