Towing with 2.0TDI Octavia-clutch problem?

Featured Replies

Anyone tow with a 2.0 TDI? I went on towing and reversing course for caravaners and towers of trailers and horseboxes etc at the weekend.

The guy running the course (a professional towing instructor) was saying how many cars suffer from clutch failure due to towing because modern cars are not always suited to it.

Has anyone had an up rated/heavy duty clutch fitted?

What are you towing?

I seem to see plenty of Octavias at caravan sites.

Just Google 'Skoda tow car of the year' - Skoda goes on winning again & again.

I tow a trailer (7ft long) with my 2.0CrTDi from time to time and have on occasion towed other vehicles (landrover defender and alfa 145). Admittedly this is not a vast towing history but I have never felt the car struggling.

What would happen with a 26ft caravan up the hardknott pass, may be a different story.

I keep to lower gears to keep the revs up a bit to avoid toasting the dual mass flywheel which I think is usually the weakest link in the chain.

I own a vrs tdi and tow a 19 foot caravan fully laden and haven't had any issues at all.

I tow a 1400kg 23foot swift caravan and havnt had any clutch issues.

The only minor complaint I have heard when towing with an Octravia, is lack of traction when towing/maneuvering on wet grass. But any front wheel drive car will have this problem.

As your Octavia is a 4x4, that rules out that issue completely. It's more than up to the task.
