what is accepted as ok for oil usage on a vRS?

I'd done 850 miles and needed to top up approx 400ml

Isn't it 500ml for 1k? So that's totally acceptable

the 0.5 litres in 1000 km depending on your driving style, is what Skoda/VAG say and have for years and possibly slightly higher in the first 5000km.

and how can that figure cover all the different engines they build and be OK..?

Expect some oil use when running in, some vRS use oil for a few thousand miles then use none.

Some never use any oil, or virtually none.

Keep the correct amount of oil and do not over fill.
