Off side HID intermittent fault (wet weather issue).

Featured Replies

I know this issue has been raised before but I could not see an answer to my question.

I have a problem that the off side dip beam does not always come on. At first I believed the bulb had blown but the next time I turned the lights on it was working.

I am aware this will be a ballast/start problem. However, this only appears to happen when it has been raining (or today snowing!) and after a period of driving it will work again.

I have not yet looked to see where the ballast is placed but would like to know if it is possible to make it more resistant to the weather before I have to bite the bullet and change the ballast. Would spraying it with a silicon spray be worth trying.

I like the fact the front fog lights are within the light cluster now as I can use these for a short periods when the HID does not work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Factory HIDs or retrofits?

Factory ones have a seal on the ballast, worth checking/replacing.

After it rains, take headlamp housing off andf have a look for signs of water in the housing.

Best place for retrofits is under front bumper cover, below headlamps, quite dry and good airflow. If the cables are damaged, water can affect startup.

I had this once, my near side didn't come on. So used my fogs. Next time I came too use the car it was fine and has been ever since.

Thanks for the replies.

HID's are factory fit on 2007 L&K.

I will take a look at the seal and headlamp housing if the weather allows this week end.

If factory HIDs, worth checking headlamp connectors, undo and redo headlamp plug, igniter to burner, and igniter to balast connectors. I had some flicker on one headlamp on the mk1 octy, turned out to be external headlamp harness connector, unplug/reconnect and the problem was gone.

I braved the chill and had a look at the car today.

I found the plastic back cover was broken at the bottom leaving the lamp exposed to the elements.

I made a DIY repair (with self tapping screw), sprayed with WD40 and put it back together. HID working again (at the moment).

Thanks again for the advice and support.
