TDI is smoking on start up, is this normal?

Featured Replies

my 110tdi estate seems to throw out smoke when i start it up and it smells very deisel rich? Its fine though once started now smoke when i boot it or anything? any ideas or is this what deisels do...

Also does anyone know how i advertise on this site as it wont let me start a new thread under the car part ofr sale section???

My TDI 130 pd does this. Been doing it for years and I'm told it's nothing to worry about.

Once the smoke is black I wouldn't worry about it. Blue or white is an issue and heavy black smoke under boost can point to problems.

Mines does it too and smells rotten on start up!

Then i started my brothers new focus tdci and it does the same for the first 2 or 3 seconds so i stopped worrying about it

My 110 sometimes starts with a puff of white - maybe 1% of all starts.

Mine puffs white diesel-smelling smoke on most starts this time of year. All it means is that the combustion chambers aren't quite warm enough to achieve complete combustion as long as it stops smoking within about 5s.

Puffs of black smoke on full throttle off-boost and on full throttle high revs upshifts are reasonably normal.
