My car is away at present being poked and prodded with with respect to gearbox, fueling and remapping. However as luck would have it, the guys working on it today went to start it to find that the starter motor has packed up. The've had it off and strapped a battery to it to find it is dead! Nice of this to happen at a garage rather than in Tesco's car park

Anyone else had starter motors fail, car is 3 and a bit years old, so is this the first of many things that are going to start falling apart. I don't think engine mods can be blamed for affecting the starter motor though.....

Haven't got a starter motor spare then?

The starter motor was changed on my 52 plate vRS under warranty as the dealer thought that it was the cause of a start up engine noise. They changed the starter and I still have the same noise. So if dealers think that starters can pack up on a car less than 3 years old may be they do.
