arb drop links fitting tips

Featured Replies

hey guys, really dont want to take it in to the garage for what is a two nut job. but having a nightmare just trying to jack it up. The wheel changing jack is too small to the lift the car high enough to get an axle stand under. Also can i have the axle stand under the axle or will that put tension in the arb?? thanks in advance

Proper jack available from LIDL for £19.99 which will do the trick

You are thinking of using the tyre changing jack to lift the car and are thinking about putting an axle stand under the 'axle' :( You need to take it somewhere.

Axle stand goes on sill but be careful not to damage it. Or you can put the axle stand on the subframe.

Think I saw a trolley jack at JTF for £ 15 if there is one near you. You'll need it sooner or later when you want to start doing more...

the car doesnt need to be that high you could always put something such as a block of wood under the bottom ball joint or on sub frame

*edit* I had typed a reply but an edit in Tapatalk decided to remove formatting and only post part of it :(<br /><br />The short version was the op's got the right idea, he's using a jack to lift and a stand to support, ok some of the terms he used aren't quite right. I've seen enough people (experienced and otherwise) work of jacks rather than stands and that's the first thing I was taught never to do.<br /><br />As to tips it's a simple job, loosen the wheel nuts before jacking the car, use a trolley jack to lift it and an axle stand to support it once lifted. Remove the wheel and put it out of the way, now apply a little penetrating oil to the thread/nut area and let it work. Now loosen the nut, but not all the way, the spring will be applying downward pressure and make removing the ball lower drop link more difficult, so now use the jack under the ball joint to counter this and compress the shock slightly, it doesn't need much, the lower drop link should be straight now and slip out without damaging the thread or the ARB. Now you can do the top nut, once it's out slot the new one in and tighten the nuts up. Make sure the nuts are tight, play in the lower will wear the threads and you'll be using a nut splitter to get it off again and replacing the drop links again or wearing the hole the threaded section passes through the ARB.
