GPS strength

Featured Replies

Can anyone who has fitted the retro Columbus and placed the GPS receiver on the metal bar below the dash board tray tell me how many satellites they are picking up. Mine seems to be between 5 and 7 out of 9 and I am wondering how many are needed generally for a fix.

From my 2 Garmin's, 3 will provide a positional fix, then the more you pick-up the more accurate your "fix" is

I have my GPS receiver towards the passenger side of the dash top box (that metal bar is magnetic, the cross bar wasn't).

I get between 7 & 12 visible depending upon where I am and have between 3 & 9 tracked.

Generally it sits at around 9 visible with 7 or 8 tracked.

Where do you find the different visible and tracked information. I only seem to have the one option. Have you still fixed the aerial on the crossbar or on something else

Press the 'Map' button to bring up the map (obviously) then press it again to get the split screen up.

As long as you don't have a route set, the 'window' that pops up will show you the current status according to the GPS.

The cross bar wasn't magnetic on my car. But remove the dash top box and look to either side and you'll see another bare metal part . These were magnetic and that is what the sensor is stuck to (it has a magnetic base).

The extremely long wire is wound around the heating vent ducts to keep it out if the way.

GPS posistioning is very sporadic as it completely depends on the area you are in as it is greatly effected by built up areas how many satellites are in sight of your antenna.

Speed the slower your are the less accurate the GPS position as the signal starts to scatter

There are hundreds of variables but with the cheap antenna they usually package with the rns510 you usually get 6-9 satellites but I have seen 11/12 on good day.

But mine still has a bit of lag where it's not exactly in the position that the car is at the time but supposedly this is solvable by getting a better antenna the type of connection you need is a Fakra connection.

I'm in the process of fitting a VAG shark fin on the roof to try to improve reception as I find it poor around here (Herefordshire & Wales) at times.

My previous Octavia had generally between 5& 7 and had no problems with the GPS receiver located on the metal cross member under the top box.
