Avic-x1r install

Featured Replies

Spent this morning at Car Audio Centre in Nottingham  having my Furby Avic'ed. The full install will include a DAB tuner, so I also had the aerial replaced with an AM/FM/DAB unit from Bluespot Audio.

There are some pictures in my gallery.

Initial likes:

  • The Avic inherits lots of behaviours from the car e.g. it turns off when the key is removed, and switches to a night display when you turn the vehicle lights on.
  • Getting rid of my PDA gives an uncluttered dash
  • The audio quality is a vast improvement, even though the output power isn't much different from the Symphony radio - so the original speakers aren't too bad after all.
  • Putting the extra bits in the passenger seat stowage box hides them away but keeps them accessible.
  • People have criticised the mapping, but I think it is as good as TomTom 3's - and more up to date. Any fancier and it would be a distraction whilst driving.
  • As you approach a junction or roundabout, you get a zoomed-in view of it, which is very useful.
  • Having the Navi instructions over the main speakers is much clearer than using a PDA, even with an amplified mount.
  • As an unexpected bonus, I can plug my digital camera into the AV inputs and use it as a viewfinder or for video playback.

Initial dislikes:

  • My flip-out cupholder (which I've never actually used) fouls the side of the head unit and won't flip out fully.
  • The slide-out tray beneath the head unit is a bit sticky - I'll have to give it some 'massage'.
  • I'll have to fit a stowage box under the driver's seat to take the displaced items from the old box.

All in all, well satisfied. Now to hack the DVD....

My cup holder doesn't flip out very nicely now with my aftermarket unit either. It need a bit of persuasion to pull out now.

good luck with it getting routes right and knowing where places actually are etc oh and actually telling you to go the right way around roundabouts !!!

doesn't every stereo dip with the lights and turn off with the ignitio

be very very very carefull about where you use the screen and leaving the front on, i had a clarion unit very similar to your but cd instead of dvd and it got nicked within 3 weeks of ownership

other than that good luck with the new unit, dunno if you saw my threads before but i took a different route, i got a jvc unit with a 3" screen on it but it still only takes a single din the screen is on the unit rather than folding out so when i take the front off i take the screen with me. it too plays dvd 's, even plays em in dolby digital :D

i still have the sat nav so it got installed and runs off of the jvc unit
