Draining my Oil Catch Can

Featured Replies

As Im doing a pre MOT check I decided to drain my catch can.

Last time I emptied it was 1200 miles ago in December . I expected to find a lot of water in it because of freezing weather + the condensation effect of cold air passing over it, but nevertheless was surprised at the quantity (approx 230ml using measuring jug). If you compare it with last year between Aug and Oct there was nothing (air temp was much higher + it doesnt use oil between changes).

What oil grade, brand etc. ?

Rename the catch can a condenser!

Without the catch can that water would have remained as vapour and would have been burnt by the engine. So the catch can has robbed extra power from your engine.....

you will find that a catch can stops the condensation and oil mist from lowering the octaine rating of the fuel so helps with smoother running and power.have had catch cans fitted to my last 2 impreza track cars making big power and makes a noticeable difference.

Impressive!

Agree on the oil vapour contaminating the charge air. But the amount of actual oil I got out of my catch can was minute (I left the mixture to fully separate, which stank!), so I would imagine it had no effect (relatively).

I always thought that increased charge air humidity was a good thing. I thought increased humidity actually did the opposite and lowered the engine's octane requirement.

My cars always felt a bit perkier on humid days anyway.

I've run with and without a catch can and it made no difference to perceived performance. Suppose if you tuned the nuts off your Scoobies then it had more of an effect then. My weedy Skoda doesn't seem too bothered anyway!

Wish I had a track toy......

Always use Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic 5w-30, oil level doesnt drop between changes, engines on 57k

Impressive!

The stink is something else tho :) .

Looks like a fine organic marmalade.

Doubt it tastes to good though..

Sold my last track toy to buy mk1 golf gti clipper.will have another one soon though as so cheap to buy and got a 500+ bhp motor sat ready to fit.can't beat it but love my new vrs and surprised how quick it is

Draining my catch can every month at the moment. Seems to get filled lot quicker than last year, so good indication temps are a lot lower.
