Budget tuning ; please comment

Well we've ditched the Cherokee for a Fabia TDI.

Yes its a alot faster but you just have to fiddle don't you.

After reading various posts on here this is my cunning plan; please let me know what you think or I could also do.....

Green Panel Filter

PD160 airintake pipe

Intercooler ****shield vent mod

Noddy 'resistor' tuning box

I reckon this should add a few HP for smallest outlay

Still won't catch my Octy though...........

Don't do the cheap resistor tuning box........You will just over fuel the car and use more gas for not a lot more power.......

If you want detahable power go for a decent tuning box, should be good for about 160Bhp!!!

The cheapo resistor mods aren't that bad.. I ran one (approx

I was hoping the filter and pipe mods would counter-act the overfueling......

You'd probably be better off spending a couple of hundred quid on a proper tuning box at the expense of the other mods.

They may make a small difference (i had standard intake at the time) but the resistor boxes are fairly crude so you will still get overfueling.

I also ran a Tunit - much more expensive and IMO not worth it (still threw a fault code, not very smooth but less smokey and ultimately a bit more power)

I've just fitted a Dragon digital tuning box to my vRS, with no other mods. It's made an impressive difference, deffinately worth the cash.

Dragon digital tuning box is the way to go for

I've got a 4yr old 60k comfort PD100 with a cheapie tuning box fitted. I get no smoke at all, and a huge increase in torque.

I have no idea which company made the box (bought from johnyardley of these pages) ... my tuning box has a switch on the side for H/L power and it really makes a difference.

As I've said elsewhere, I've just done 1k miles to Cornwall and back in pretty hot temperatures with the power set to H. The temp guage stayed rock steady even in slow moving traffic jams around the Royal Cornwall showground, and it flew when an opening appeared and the throttle was floored ... with no smoke!

I've driven to work today with the tuning box set to L and it feels gutless by comparison.

Once I've recovered from the holiday's excesses I'll be fitting a Jetex filter and a PD160 intake ... why spend a fortune?

AMD 1 Click ? doesnt appear to be mentioned as an option.

Is it possible that the smoking using these boxes is just a more intense version of what always happens with diesels if you don't 'clear them out' with higher revs? More fuel=more soot right? Would be interesting to see driving styles of folks with smoky vs non smoky upgrades.

ps I regularly rev the nuts off me standard Fab and it's as clean as a whistle yet other tdi s I've seen do seem to chuff a bit. (psh-t-cff..psh-t-cff ivor the engine rules btw)

Mine is nice and smoke free, but my driving style tends to be quite "positive". My missus drove us home from seeing some school friends (75 mile trip) and she managed 73.5mpg average

73.5 is good going!!!! Ive 'only' made 68 on a 25 mile trip and that was doing 40-50 for a good chunk of it (unmodded tho). Don't know if I'd have the patience to get higher than that!

Do you find that tuning box helps with economy generally then?

At the risk of upsetting Ivan (oh what the hell ;)), yep the economy is much better for round town type driving and I can often see over 65+ mpg if I'm just pootling around. Normal commute has gone up from 47-50mpg to between 50-55mpg which is a variety of motorways, dual carriageways and country roads, and on an out and out run, it's usually 40-45mpg.

My at the pump calculations for a full tank are a couple of mpg better than before, but I guess there are too many variables to be able to accurately compare :D

Chris

I'm guessing the better torque will allow the engine to labour less in a higher gear. My route to work has some hilly bits in it so the 5th gear :D

Look for the home made one on here - the same as the cheapo resistor boxes, but
