Ecu

Featured Replies

Hi

First post....I have searched to try to find the answer to my question without success and apologise if the answer already here somewhere.

My car is a 1.9tdi 100 Fabia.

Can I buy off ebay an (for instance ) ecu for a 1.2 petrol fabia and send it off to have it remapped to 130bhp, then using vagcom, link it to my vehicle/ keys.

In other words are the ecus all the same physically but have different relevant maps on them?

Cheers

Mike

I believe that the 1.2 ecu is different to the 1.9tdi ... Just make sure with other members

The petrol and diesel ECU's share nothing in common. Also the ECU must be paired to the car otherwise it will not start, since the instrument cluster contains the immobiliser and key pairings. If you buy an ECU with the exact same part number, it can be done but it will require a visit to a dealer to get the replacement ECU paired to your car.

Basically the dashpod and ECU function as one.

A much better solution would be to simply get your existing ECU mapped via the OBD port.

The reason I'm asking is that you can buy an ecu on ebay for £10-15 and posting it off for a remap seems possible for approx 40% of the usual remap costs.

the ECU on ebay is cheap for a reason, without a dealer visit they are virtually useless.

I have the same problem with my Audi and its instrument cluster. My current one has a fault, I can get a replacement from ebay for £60 but I need a main dealer to code it as it requires an online connection to Audi HQ to get the login codes. For the total cost, I just put up with the fault.

A remap can be had from Shark Performance in Mansfield, for a very good price. No need for dealer visits and the additional costs of labour involved. In fact the Shark remap could be less than the ECU from the bay, the dealer labour charge and remap / postage costs.

Petrol and diesels use different ecu's. not sure on the petrol but diesels are Bosch edc15p+.

To mate the new ecu to your cluster requires VCDS and the secret key code (skc) of you immobiliser. The later being hard too obtain.

The petrol is siemens

You couldn't even do that with an ecu from the same type of car without removing the immo functions which has insurance implications in itself beyond declaring a map. You can buy a lead and unknown maps on ebay for similar money and ruin your own ECU, you might get lucky but you probably won't.

The reason you pay good money for a decent map is simple, it won't trash your clutch with a massive torque spike or have random over fueling for no reason and it will have been tested on a hell of a lot of cars before you got anywhere near it.

What you choose to do is totally up to you but personally if you want the power you pay the price.
