Worth getting an uprated clutch ?

Featured Replies

My MK1 VRS is running roughly 165hp and 298fpt. It's due for a new clutch. I've had my cousin quote me £500 for a genuine standard clutch and flywheel (that includes fitting). Is it worth me getting an uprated clutch ?

Hi, I guess that would depend on whether or not you plan to go further with power modifications in future. Your power and torque figures ought to be fine with a standard clutch if driven properly.

Quite a few people have mentioned the Valeo SMF kit on here recently with positive reviews; I think it can be bought from Euro Car Parts with a considerable discount code from this forum. This kit might offer a bit of extra piece of mind at potentially no extra cost (I don't know how much they are I'm afraid, though remember reading they are very reasonable).

If you're planning on further upgrades in the future like a bigger turbo and so on, then now might be an ideal time to spend a few extra quid on a clutch that would handle more power and torque. Numerous site sponsors on here could help you in that department, my guess would be around £700-£950 for an uprated kit depending on your requirements.

I hear the only thing you really need to do with a standard clutch is not boot it in 5th and 6th unless your about 2k revs.

So why do you need a new clutch?

If its not slipping and the flywheel isnt rattling its head off i see no need to change it

It is slipping. I said in the first post it needs changing. I was mainly asking if it's worth spending the extra crash on an uprated one with what power my car is running.

I would say so as my experience is a mapped motor really needs an uprated clutch for any type of longevity.

Id go for a mild upgrade if you werent planning any more power mods!

Cg do a clutch that will suit you and so do sachs which retains the stock dual mass flywheel

I may have one for sale soon, uprated sachs clutch. Keep an eye out on the sale forum over the weekend ;)

Oh I shall. :p

 Indeed, but the flywheel will suffer too, not just clutch.

But in answer to your initial question...

NO. Stick with standard, thats a good price IMO. Uprated clutch and flywheel kits start from just below £1k fitted.

Many people have run far more power than you on standard clutches/ flywheels for for tens of thousands of miles without issue.

Just to add for the OP's information, the Valeo SMF kit thread has popped back up & someone mentions the kit priced at £371 with the Briskoda discount, which sounds like a good price for a good kit to suit your requirements.

I think an OEM clutch is fine, purely for the reason that the flywheel is the weak spot.

After a genuine 290lbft or so it starts to moan and groan.

OEM will also fit perfectly with no hassle etc etc

If you use CarParts4Less.co.uk (sister company to Euro Car Parts) and discount code save10 it can be had for £334.75. The only thing is though is that it can only be delivered to your billing address.
