Gear Trouble

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My 2001 VRs has started giving me grief again, this time the gears are being peculiar.

It started with going into fourth gear feeling strange, before it would click in nice and crisply with no issue now it feels like there is some slight resistance like im pulling it down into a sponge or something! This started around 2 weeks ago but the car drove fine even in fourth.

Last night when I got into the car I found it very difficult to get the car out of Third! It was stuck for all intents and purposes... I couldn't get it into fourth at all and could just about get it back into first and then second... this cleared away again after around 10 minutes of me dreading driving down a dual carriage way in third gear...

So me being a car noob I have no idea whats wrong, is it the gear box banjaxed etc?

Ideas?

Thanks for the help!

Fionn

Does it also resist to go into gear when the engine is off or the problem is only when the engine is on?

Couldn't tell you, Is that an expensive job in general? I assume I should start there with a mechanic?

Do it yourself job, you just need a 5mm drill bit

Once you've done the realignment it may be worth changing the oil in the gearbox, it made a noticeable difference to the gear change after 80k miles.

Before you ask, just get the proper oil from the dealer or TPS.

Can a clutch on it's way out not cause gear shift issues?

Can a clutch on it's way out not cause gear shift issues?

But then it should be easier to change gear with the engine not running.

Strangely everything has gone back to normal, Fourth all of a sudden feels perfect again... will deffo ask the mechanic to take a gander the next time its in for a service.

You sure there's nothing getting tangled up in the shifter mechanism on top of the gearbox? Common for the SAI inlet pipe to dangle down and get in the way.
