Power steering fault

Featured Replies

Can anyone help with an irritating fault that's disturbing my enjoyment of my lovely Skoda Fabia TDI 1.9? On almost every journey the power steering cuts out for a few seconds at a time, illuminating the steering-warning light on the display panel (which goes out when the car is re-started and the mechanism resets). It's that terrible thing, an intermittent fault. It's been into my regular (non-Skoda) garage twice, and they've checked pump levels, earth contact, and various other issues, but the fault continues. The garage says they can't access computer diagnostics because "I have a non-standard radio" (?). Any advice or guidance on this fault would be really, really appreciated.

Thanks

Nicholas

Pull the fuse for the stereo and the diagnostics should come back on.

It will be a fault with the power steering sensor on the rack though, have a search, been covered loads.

Thanks for this - and I see what you mean about past coverage. In my case, I've also noticed a very faint flickering of the mileometer etc display-boxes when the side-lights are on, as if there's a dodgy contact. Might not have anything to do with the steering fault, though. But can a faulty sensor actually affect power steering - rather than just switching on the warning light? My power steering definitely cuts out for a few seconds at a time (I nearly hit a car on a turn last time it happened).

Depends usually on the age of the car and what system is fitted, there are two different makes of pump. Also latter cars inc the vRS have a different sensor in the rack which as yet hasnt failed.

Mine's a 2001 tdi. Wonderful drive. But if sensor-failure can cut power as well as set off warning light, I reckon that must it it.

I appreciate the help, thanks.

PAS power I assume you mean?

And yes the PAS light will illuminate.

I'm phrasing badly. I mean, I presume that a dodgy sensor will not just illuminate the PAS warning light, but will actually have an effect, de-activating power steering, if only for a few moments.

:( mine does that occasionally especially at low revs

It really depends on whats happenin with the sensor, ive seen them do all sorts of odd things. Sensor is
