1.9 tdi intermittent starting problem clicking

Featured Replies

Hi all have a 2006 bxe octavia with a mere 235,000 on the clock. For some reason it just doesn't want to start and clicks away like mad. It had had the battery checked and replaced a brand new starter motor checked the alternator checked over the wiring and earths nothing visible and replaced several relays I. It through up the fault code 05660 which I can't seem to find anything out about. Can any one help?

Also when it does start it will be fine for say another 100 turns of the key then start playing up again and it will start no problem if bump started.

Ignition switch probs?

All the dash lights light up though?

It does sound like a connection problem especially with all the other things you've replaced. Could it be an engine earth issue?

Also tried a jump lead from the battery to the engine to act as a earth when it just clicks and made no differance.

I know you said the battery has been tested but my money would lie with it being responsible

I'll try another new battery again and have a look at the starter switch.

The current draw by a starter motor can be in the hundreds of amps. The clicking is because there is insufficient umpf left to clamp the contacts inside the solenoid, so it just bounces back and forth. Why there are insufficient amps available is the question.

Its not unknown for a brand new battery to be faulty either. You can't assume its perfect because its new.

If you are sure the earth connection is ok, then try the feed side. Process of elimination, I'd start with the cheapest. Check nothing is left on - has a new gadet been fitted? Is that ok?

Fixed it the positive heavy lead that runs from the battery to the starter took it off and the connection to the starter practically fell off so replaced it and all is well.
