USB VAG-Com

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ive heard there are some problems with using USB cables with VAG Com. Is this the case or was it just with the older software. Im a bit snookered as I dont have a serial port on my Lappy so would I just be better off with the Serial cable and a USB adaptor?

Thanks for any advice

Rich

I'm using Ross-Tech's HEX-USB+CAN lead with a Dell Inspiron and USB2 card (the laptop's inbuilt USB ports are USB1.0). No problems at all with the latest software Release 504.1.

Excuse my ignorance, what is CAN? Am I right in thinking its a different way of connecting to the cars diagnostic port?

Rich

CAN is Controller Area Network. It's just a networking system used on the new models.

The USB is only a problem with USB 1.0 and pre windows XP computers

You only need CAN with VAG cars launched after 2003 (New golf, Octavia, etc)

Thanks kindly.

Ive had a good look about and it sounds like USB can be a bit hit and miss. Is there a list anywhere of compatibilities?, there seems a few different versions (CAN/COM etc). Are the KKL interface cables completely compatible with the latest VAG COM version?

What are the options for an 03 Octy RS - I think Im right in saying its a non CAN interface?

Thanks again

Rich

The 03 Octavia vRS is non-CAN. The major advantage of buying a CAN-compatible lead is that it can be used with the latest generation VAG cars as well as older ones.

I gotcha, whats the story with the KKL cables?

Have you had a read of Ross-Tech's site here, Rich?
