Don't always trust the rear parking sensors!

Featured Replies

There I was on Saturday lunchtime reversing into a space & marvelling at the rear parking sensor. Then on saturday evening I reversed into another space only to find I'd reversed into a scafolding pole that someone had kindly stuck out into a parking bay :-(

The sensor didn't spot it as it was just above the line of the sensors. Fortunately the pole impression has largely dissappeared from the bumper but something to be aware of!

Has anyone else managed to reverse into something?

Yes, metal pole hidden in the grass. Not a big damage, but annoying.

My wife managed to reverse into a 6 foot high concrete wall despite the 'beep' going continuous, the screen lit up in red and me shouting stop... now that's annoying!

I once reversed a car into a wall that was ABOVE my sensors. It was in a customer's underground car park and there was a kind of 3 foot deep alcove open under the main wall. Sensors had only just started to beep when the top of the boot hit the wall. It was also all painted white and quite dark, I was watching the reflection of the reversing light off the alcove wall to judge my distance.

I did notice the next time I was there that the edges had gained some hi-vis black and yellow tape to make it more obvious.

Yes ,I reversed into a large knobbly spare wheel mounted quite high up on the rear door of a Jacked up Landrover discovery.

Lots of small scratches from the mud still clinging to the wheel.

No sensor if perfect. The electromagnetic ones are good at detecting items such as horizontal scaffold poles, but they only give you a warning while you are moving.

Me too, a small post made out of angle iron , punched a hole in the bumper requiring a repair , was very annoyed !!

CAn work the other way, arrived at a client site yesterday, reversed into a space (I walways reverse park) and the sensors came on almost immeadiately, but I was about 2 foot ahead of all the other cars.

I know the Superb is long but not that long - got out and the sparse hedge behind me and a couple of small branches sticking out and the sensors had picked them up. Had about another2-3 ft to go!

All I can say is don't always presume you have parking sensors.!!! I was parking up after driving one of our fleet cars Ford galaxy. Reverse parked into its slot as in my orders you have to, and just kept going as I couldn't hear any beeps. Luckily I got stopped millimetres short of the car parked behind!

In my defence I have had parking sensors on my cars since 2006.

Nothing to do with parking sensors, but I recently reversed into a wall which wasn't there. My neighbour had his front drive done, including adding about 6ft in width to his front wall. I reversed out of our shared drive as normal and bang, two foot of his dwarf wall knocked down, and new bumper for me. As I was reversing relatively fast, there wasn't time for me to register the beeps and attempt to stop. Funny thing is my wife did exactly the same thing, but with the old non-fixed bumper still attached. I had to pay £120 first time and £50 second time to get the wall fixed, plus £150 insurance excess for the bumper.
