Playbook 64Gb or Nexus 32Gb

Featured Replies

Looking for a 7" tablet.

I'm not a Facebooker or a Tweeter so it'll be used mostly for browsing the web, viewing on demand tv and playing back stored content (probably Bob the Builder DVDs for the wee man).

I know the Nexus is the better device on paper but the Playbook is only £129 with double the storage. Also the Nexus only plays flash content with a bit of jiggery pokery the playbook does it out the box. And the Playbook will get the BB10 upgrade this year.

Also since the small person will get to use it the Playbook is allegedly more robust or at least cheaper if he breaks it.

But more apps on the Nexus than the Playbook

SWMBO wants a 10" tab, she doesn't know why but she does. I'd rather get the Nexus 10 when the price for the bigger versions drops a little. So maybe a better idea to spend less now.

Anyone used both.

any outstanding feature that makes one better than the other?

I don't have a BB phone or a data contract so that's not an issue.

Wait and see if Google update them at Google I/O in may and might be some decent second hand bargains to be had or the new version.

Would rather have an Android tablet, purely because of the apps.

I have a Playbook, and to be honest I'd be looking at a 10" tablet. I've found the 7" device a little to small for my taste.

The £50 more for the nexus is well worth it.

Bought 64gb playbook for films on flights and quick browse on web at home. Email is ok and it has some good features, word and excel type docs ok. V few Apps and my ipod touch is much quicker and therefore if a Nexus is about as quick I would buy that.

Nexus is much slicker to use than the playbook so I decided to get that in the end.

Since the Nexus will probably get stolen by SWMBO until she gets a 10" tab for herself I'll probably keep an eye out for a used Playbook on Fleabay. 64Gb might make a good purchase used for flights.

Cheers for the replies

Nexus 32GB

Got one myself about 3 weeks ago, £140 brand new

Been taking it to work almost every night, mainly to watch TV shows/films but it's just as good for other purposes

I have the Novatech 10" tablet , (£145) and am really pleased with it.

I did quite a bit of research into this at the start of the year and went into the search with a very open mind - like the OP I was drawn to the cheapness of the BB device, however I settled on the Nexus 7 (in preference to some 10" devices as well) as for the price/specification it cannot be beaten.

So far I have been extremely pleased with my choice. Occasionally the extra size of a 10" tablet would be nice but those times are rare. The speed is brilliant and it has a decent battery life as well. I have a mate the went with the cheap BB device and has regretted it ever since.

A lot of Android devices (especially the "Nexus" branded ones) are coming without Flash support. I'm a bit of a technophobe, but I managed to install a working Flash player without any problems and it does everything that I could want it to do from a tablet device.

Yes I've got flash on the tab now but it won't work with picky sites that want 11.2. The APT only goes to 11.1.

I figured Flash is dying tech anyway and will get replaced by HTML5 shortly in most places.

I did consider a Kindle HD for a little while. I've an eInk Kindle which I think is great and I have no real problems being tied to the amazon company plus it appealed to me to get my Lovefilm on the device too. But in the end I figured again Silverlight is a dead end and Lovefilm will probably shift to HTML5 in the future as well.

Everyone is moving to HTML5 as soon as DRM can be included in the standards a it massively increases the customer base. Personally I'd go with an iPad. I've yet to find an android device that works with the same level of build quality, continuity or integration and I've had a few now.

Out of your two options it's a nexus every time, it's the best option by a mile as playbook is effectively dead to RIM, the last software update was proof of that, they're focusing on phones to survive, no significant update to anything else till they're out the door and selling. If they don't sell then you won't get any updates at all :D
