Gear change trouble- might be cylinder sleeve? Advice please.

Featured Replies

Hi. My Octy went nicely into reverse and then decided it didn't want to try any of the other gears. Clutch depresses fine but it was a two-hander to get it out of gear. Could get the car into 2nd and above but not first. Have been told it might be the clutch cylinder sleeve and that it's a gearbox out job. Thing is I've just spent a couple of hundred on a new starter motor this week and I can't really stand a massive bill. I'm not very knowledgable so I'd appreciate any opinions on the problem and how much I might expect to pay for that kind of work...

Cheers.

Sounds like the gear selector linkage needs to be set up. Check on Youtube there's plenty of guides on there.

I've seen one post where something dropped into the selector mechanism causing similar problems, was ages ago

Wasn't it something the cover off the back of the headlight. I would check the mechanism and see if the lever on the top of the gearbox moves freely.

Also heard of a vacuum return/vent pipe becoming disconnected from the airbox and causing issues too.

Think it was the pipe off the air box

Pretty sure it was the corugated SAI pipe to the air box that had dropped on to the linkage.

Thanks folks- as mentioned, I've just had a new starter so it's quite possible something has been dislodged and fallen into the selector. Here's hoping.

happened to my daughters car. tried the adjusting the gear linkage, ended up putting another gearbox in :(
