how far to modify my vrs

Featured Replies

HI wanted to make my brs go abit faster but want to keep it reliable and not turn it into a dog..

going to do remap, EGR delete and decat. guessing this will get me to around 170 - 180bhp ish??

will a bigger front mount inter cooler do much to help my power, or is it an item for big pockets only seeing small power increases?

thanks.

ps ive already got subtle go faster green leds in my side vents and some go faster green mudflaps on order :p

Once you map it (170bhp) then you'll need to change the turbo for more power.

It all depends upon how much you have to spend really. The safest route is get a clutch friendly map from a reputable tuner (eg Shark Performance, Jabbasport or Unit 18 to mention but a few)which would see 165-170bhp approximately. Much beyond that power you'd be advised to uprate your clutch, turbo and intercooler (plus other essentials like brakes and suspension etc) which then gets rather expensive.

A front mount intercooler won't give you any more power, it will just reduce the effects of heatsoak when you're really pushing the car- trackdays for example.

In the long run if you're looking to go down the bigger turbo etc route, I'd keep an eye on the classifieds on here. Folks regularly sell upgraded parts on here and bargains can be had; so you could buy bits if/when they pop up and have them fitted as and when if you're on a budget.

thanks for that. i think ill keep to the low budget for now :)

i wont be doing anything to it for a month or so. sorting my unsurance out and getting some good tyres on it. but when i do have some free money and time ill get it mapped :)

As many will say its not all about power you need other things to compliment it. Good to see your getting good tyres first but the like of decent suspension and biger brakes will improve your car no end.

Also you can modify these engines alot and wont really sacrifice reliability.

Well i learnt that handling can make up for power on allot of open country roads in my first car.

fiat stilo with 225 tyres. when i first got it , it had cheap budgets on it but i put pricey tyres on it after that. ok i couldnt do wheel spins or handbrakes but i could keep up and loose nearly anything on a twisty road.

Pluss with the (not going very fast) smooth and quiet pick up on the fabia you find yourself going into corners allot quicker than you first think. and westfield tyres dont give me the most confidence. although to be fair they grip ok

ISTR Stilos are pretty good gripping cars. If a little unexciting...

Standard Fabia VRS suspension leaves a lot to be desired. With other cars, can do the Eibach treatment and simply replace the ARBs. With the Fabia VRS, it really needs better spring/damper arrangement. Eibach springs (or similar) plus dampers, or a mid-range coilover kit is probably the way to go. Then get a Whiteline RARB.

A simple remap (whether generic or custom mapped) provides the best bang for buck in terms of £££s for horses.

EGR delete should be done at the same time as the remap or shortly thereafter.

Decat these days is looking like an MOT failure. Or will be soon IMO.

Shouldn't need an intercooler for "normal" driving. Consider if driving on the door handles often, trips with 4-5 people in car and/or trackdays.

If driven enthusiastically brakes will wilt before the third or fourth stab. If that becomes an issue, easiest upgrade is to the VAG 312mm range.

Also:

- Get cruise control, is a simple and relatively cheap upgrade.

the car came with allot of standard factory upgrades on it, all subtle and none boyracerish.

Cruise control, heated seats, projector headlights and factory HID's (not the blue kind) parking sensors (but i think these are aftermarket not that i need), ICE ipod adaport kit to the multicd changer (not factory ,but handy)

thanks for your advise btw. ive not had the brakes fade yet. ive had them steaming in the rain though lol. im a fast driver but smooth on the brakes and steering (kinda driving stile form the stilo as that learnt me to carry allot of speed through corners too make up for the straight line speed. )

Will the RARB make the back end alittle less grippy. as i quite like how the back end stays planted even when im altering the balance of car half way through corners. thanks

Fmic would be the first thing I'd do second time round. Best mod I done!

My preference is brakes, then remap, then suspension.

Then aim for around 200-220bhp with supporting mods which the mk1 VRS can handle well.

After that it gets expensive...

i cant really lower mine. as my driveway is like driving over a small mountain and quite a few cars scrap going over it :/ but RARB is something i might get around too doing.

today with the rain i ended up putting some legs in the box below the radio lol

LED's

How you powering them?

  • Author

i find an ignition live behind the glovebox , ran a 5 amp fuse then a switch in glovebox then too the hole

they draw nearly no power and the ignition live means you can just forget about them and leave them on.

ill be putting similar in the footwells and in some nice dark holes soon. if anyone is interested ill make a little guide up with pics. while im doing it ??

its just alittle something that i have a habbit of doing when i get a few hours of boredom. but always get people commenting when they are in my car and want the same doing too theirs lol
