Big problem

Featured Replies

I own a vrs 1.8t 55 plate and the oil light began flashing, added oil thinking it was that and a slight banging has begun so ive stopped driving as ive been told low oil pressure is the cause what could have caused this and is it time for a new engine? Thanks chris

It could be a blocked oil pickup.

Banging is obviously a bad sign. The damage will be determined by how hard and for how long you drove it after the oil pressure warning came on. Damaged head, block and turbo would not be unusual.

At this stage, I would drop the sump and check the oil pump/pickup. If it is a blocked pickup, replace it, the associated o-ring, fill it up with new oil and see how it runs.

Oil pickup strainer blocked thus causing oil starvation

If its knocking then you prob have killed engine and turbo !!

Where abouts are you ?

The oil is thicker when cold therefore it might not knock straight away,

As soon as the oil warms up it thins out and then your engine knocks.

Either way if it's knocking it's in need of work and you have 2 choices really.

1) drop sump and replace the pickup pipe, shells and do and oil & filter change and hope for the best.

2) keep driving it and wait for the rod to come through the block and then just replace the engine (remember with this option you will need to turn the radio up louder eachtime you drive the car though).

Mine did this and go it back up and running with no serious problems. Although as soon as it started I did drive it home like an utter grandad , sticking well below 1000rpm!. Quick easy way to check if any serious wear has occurred to your engine I found is to remove cam cover and check out the condition of cam lobes and lifters. If there is tiny surface wear and still thin layer of oil on cams then you are lucky. I also filtered my old oil after changing the pickup pipe checking for any metal filings from big end bearings etc.. for piece of mind. I was one of the lucky ones. I limped it home for a good 10 minutes with the oil light on. I dare say any longer and it might have been serious! The only knocking I had was the lifters in the cylinder head.

What is this mate im not that clued up on cars so a guy at the garage did the work so im guessing no

I suggest you take it back to him and tell him to change the oil pickup pipe inside sump

£9 from main dealer for pipe

£15 for sump sealant

As you will have the same issue in prob a week or so but might kill it next time

Simple job no more than an hour labour !!

Stop posting the very same questions in the mk 2 section..............its getting very confusing!..........you will get a better reply here in the mk1 section........ oh & replace the oil pick up strainer as you have been told many times.

+1

Get a new o-ring for the suction pipe (pickup) too.

Has anyone suggested oil pick up pipe yet :giggle:

My prediction as follows - turbo failure within a month, or, escaping rods
