Black round exhaust,

Featured Replies

Hi all. This is annoying me more then out now, my exhaust gets black pretty quick I cleaned it quick 3 days ago an could see the silver but its already starting going black, it don't smell of anything while engines running or out so wondered if anyone knew why it might be doing it, or if the dames happening to anyone else?

Thanks.

It sounds like soot. Is the car using oil (any oil)? has it been remapped?

no mate its not really using much oil. And I bought it off a guy in Liecester wasn't really modded an don't think it's mapped , :)

I asked because crudely mapped cars can black smoke a bit, particularly if you bang your foot hard down off boost (I've seen it happen with a Mitsy Evo so definitely petrol engine).

Anyway, does this soot look the same colour and texture as the stuff inside the tailpipe? If so, does it go much more than about 6mm (1/4") forward from the cut end?

Oh right i see. an yea it's same as what's inside the end of tailpipe not sure how far it goes in. I'll have a look when I go out, it's slightly wet with the condensation annive wiped it to smell , no scent at all. I'd put a pic up but don't think I can on a post off my iPhone can I?

The engines are very sooty no stopping it.

I've had 2 and both were sooty, one was standard One modded.

I meant "how far does the soot extend on the outside of the tailpipe?" On the inside it goes all the way up to at least the cat, and maybe the turbo depending how far forward you need to go to get hot enough for it to burn back off as fast as it's put down. As to it being wet, the reaction is C8H18 + O2 -> CO2 + H2O ignoring incomplete combustion, so the wet is water!

I have this too, just a normal coking up that happens on all exhausts to be honest I thought. Had it with a few cars with no problems. I don't worry about mine. Always get some on the lip.

Plus mine has had remap and 79k, topped up with zero oil in 3k miles
