Fuel pump discrepancy

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone had ever complained about a fuel pump overcharging?

My wife topped up today because being Bank Holiday weekend and not working near the only place we can get Momentum she thought it would be wise.

She'd only done 164 miles since last fill, said the gauge was reading just above half and put 32.32 litres in the tank to full, I've had my doubts about some pumps at this station in the past because Fuelly has shown some poor returns (should be able to use my Fuelly to see for yourself)

If there is a problem with the pump, where do I go from here?

Many thanks for any help.

its some part of revenue and customs (weights and measures I think!) but they should check pump stations locally...

note: I dont think the vRS gague reads half is half..... mine stays on full for many many miles, then drops like a stone, to about half, then drops more slowly (shape of the tank/positioning of sensor?)

think my point is, a half readin needle may not be half a tank :)

I believe that Trading Standards are responsible for checking fuel pumps.

'If there are serious complaints or concerns with a pump, then Trading Standards Officers have powers to investigate, issue notices to bring the equipment back to legal compliance or, if necessary, put the pump out of use until the issues are put right.'

She may have over filled the car. Some nozzles are bigger and can push the vent nipple.

I know what you're saying, I don't trust the gauge but with only 164 miles from the tank I shouldn't be able to get 32 litres in when it's done the same journeys as every other tank.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated :-)

Would that result in spillage? She assures me there was no spillage :-(

Thank you for your reply :-)

These are my Fuelly results to date, all pretty consistent apart from todays and 13/12/12, would you agree? Apologies for layout, it changed after posting, I've sorted as best as possible 000.0 is mileage, 00.00 litres and 00.0 mpg

Over fill with vent pushed in would mean no spillage and possibly an extra 10 litres more in the car.

Fuel tank is 45 litres with 10 litres roughly as venting. 55 litres possible.

Ahh, ok, maybe I should see what this tankful returns then. Thank you

No problem - may take 200 miles for half a tank?

I used to get 300 ish to 38 litres or so.

I now do £60 or 45 litres in the Rapid, roughly 400 miles or shorter journeys.

Historically I've been getting over 200 miles for similar literage, all bar 2 fills which have been way off the mark, when I get my receipts back from the accountant I'll check to see if it's the same pump too. Thanks again.

Yep - easy to get another 5 or 7 litres in if you inadvertently hit the vent nipple in the filler neck. Not sure about 10 though? I can normally get about 380 miles from a tank (no vent); 420-ish from a vent-tricked tank.
